Clearing the air: Investigating the odor from Pittsboro wastewater treatment plant 25 Mar 9:41 PM (8 days ago)

Pittsboro, NC – Sludge aeration at the Pittsboro wastewater treatment plant is reportedly causing an unpleasant odor for some people living near South Small Street.

This is the second time in as many months that the regular sludge aeration process has caused complaints from neighbors.

The sludge aeration process at the plant has not changed in more than two years. Approximately every six weeks, operators at the plant mix up the sludge basin to prepare it for the addition of lime. Lime then sits in with the sludge for 24 hours to effectively inactivate viruses, bacteria, and other pathogens as well as raise the sludge’s pH level above 12.

Once that is complete, the sludge can then be hauled off to permitted farmland in the area and reused as fertilizer — providing moisture, nutrients and conditioning to the soil.

Exactly why the odor for some residents near the plant has been more noticeable the last two times the plant has activated the process remains unknown. The recent odor reports have come from neighborhoods south of the plant; longtime plant operators said reports in the past have tended to come from areas northeast of the plant. Recent land clearing in the area has been proposed as one possible reason for the odor being more noticeable south of the plant. Climate conditions may also have played a role in the dispersion of the odor.

As for the current status of the process, plant operators plan to add the lime to the sludge basin Wednesday and haul the sludge off Thursday.

TriRiver Water continues to investigate this situation and possible ways to mitigate the odor emitted during this process.

NC State welcomes Will Wade as new head basketball coach 25 Mar 5:42 PM (8 days ago)

Raleigh, NC – In a highly anticipated press conference, NC State University introduced Will Wade as the new head coach of its men’s basketball program. With a focus on revitalizing the program and engaging with the passionate fan base, Wade emphasized his commitment to building a competitive team and fostering community connections. Drawing from his past experiences and lessons learned, Wade aims to transform NC State into a consistent winner in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).

The Passionate Fan Base: A Driving Force

During the press conference, Wade expressed his excitement about joining a program with such a dedicated fan base. “We have passionate fans. We got fans that care,” he said, highlighting the importance of community support in the success of a sports program. Wade acknowledged the challenges faced by the team in recent years but emphasized that the commitment from fans is a vital component in turning the program around. “When people care, that’s a good thing,” he remarked, noting that he would much rather have a passionate fan base than one that is indifferent.

Wade’s enthusiasm for engaging with fans was evident as he outlined his plans to sell out the Lenovo Center, home to NC State basketball. “We want 19,500 people in there, and we’re very excited about the possibilities,” he stated, indicating his desire to create a winning culture that resonates with supporters. The new coach aims to ignite the program and foster a sense of pride among fans, encouraging them to be part of the journey toward success.

Competing in the New Era of College Basketball

One of the pressing issues facing college basketball programs today is the impact of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals and the transfer portal. Wade addressed these concerns head-on, reassuring fans that NC State would be competitive on a national level. He emphasized the importance of effectively managing resources rather than simply having the most financial backing. “We have robust NIL, and we are going to be competitive at the upper end of this league,” Wade asserted, highlighting the university’s commitment to supporting the basketball program.

Wade acknowledged the challenges posed by the current state of college basketball, where the transfer portal resembles a “wild wild west.” However, he expressed confidence in his ability to navigate these complexities and build a strong roster. “It’s about being able to efficiently use the resources that we have,” he explained, indicating that strategic planning would be crucial in attracting top talent to NC State.

Learning from Past Experiences

Reflecting on his journey as a coach, Wade discussed the valuable lessons he learned during his time at McNeese State and previous positions. “I’ve grown and gotten better,” he said, noting that his experiences have shaped him into a more effective leader. Wade emphasized the importance of creating a positive player experience and fostering a fun, engaging environment for athletes.

He also touched on the significance of personal growth and self-reflection. “I’m not the same coach I was when I started,” Wade remarked, indicating that he has evolved through both successes and setbacks. His willingness to adapt and learn from past mistakes positions him as a more mature and capable leader for the NC State program.

Building Trust and Community Engagement

Wade understands that trust and buy-in from both players and the fan base are essential for success. He emphasized the importance of community engagement and accessibility as key strategies for building relationships. “We’re going to be out in the community,” he stated, expressing his eagerness to connect with students and fans alike. Wade believes that fostering these connections will create a sense of ownership among supporters, encouraging them to rally behind the team.

The new coach’s commitment to engaging with the student body is particularly noteworthy. With nearly 40,000 students at NC State, Wade sees an opportunity to cultivate a strong following among the university’s diverse population. “I think if you’re accessible and you’re out there I think people are more likely to come to the games,” he explained, underscoring the importance of building a loyal fan base.

The Road Ahead

As Wade embarks on this new chapter, he faces the challenge of competing in the highly regarded Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). He expressed admiration for the league’s rich history and competitive spirit, stating, “NC State is one of the major brands in this league.” Wade is determined to elevate the program, emphasizing that a strong NC State basketball team is essential for the overall success of the ACC.

Wade’s vision includes not only winning games but also developing players both on and off the court. He aims to create a culture of excellence that extends beyond basketball, preparing student-athletes for success in life.

North Carolina’s soaring property taxes 25 Mar 2:09 PM (8 days ago)

By Algenon Cash

Raleigh, NC – North Carolina homeowners are facing a new challenge — one that should be a cause for celebration but instead feels like a financial gut punch. Counties across the state are releasing new property revaluations with eye-popping increases, in some cases pushing home values up by more than 50%. While rising property values signal a strong housing market, they come with a hidden cost: higher property tax bills. And many homeowners simply aren’t prepared.

I recently attended the Piedmont Triad Regional Housing Summit, where housing experts, planners, and policymakers gathered to discuss the pressing issues affecting our region. One theme was clear — housing affordability in North Carolina is under siege from multiple angles, and the ripple effects could be devastating for homeowners, renters, and even local governments.

The primary driver behind these sky-high valuations is simple — there just aren’t enough homes to go around. A limited housing supply has fueled bidding wars, pushing prices higher and, in turn, raising the baseline for property-tax assessments.

But here’s where it gets complicated. Builders and developers, the very people who could boost the housing supply, are pulling back. Why? One major reason is because interest rates remain at stubbornly high levels, making it far more expensive to finance new construction. The result is even fewer homes being built, keeping prices artificially high.

I’ve spoken directly with developers who say that without a major policy shift, homebuilding in North Carolina will slow to a crawl. Some believe the answer lies in embracing modular construction, which can deliver new homes more quickly and at a lower cost by using factory-built components. North Carolina has a rich manufacturing history with more-than-qualified workers, who could staff factories delivering new homes.

One builder told me, “Modular construction could be a game-changer, but North Carolina’s building codes and local zoning regulations make it difficult to scale. We need serious reform if we want to see real impact.”

This issue isn’t just theoretical. For everyday homeowners, the impact is immediate and painful. In Wake County, revaluations increased residential property values by an average of 53%. In Forsyth County, new valuations are coming in higher than expected, and property owners are bracing for bigger tax bills.

Families are struggling with rising grocery prices, higher interest rates impacting car loans, mortgage rates, and credit card bills. Many consumers bought their homes years ago, now inflated tax assessments are reducing discretionary income further. How much can families truly handle?

A Forsyth County resident shared her frustration after the summit: “I’ve lived in my house for over a decade. Absolutely nothing about my home changed, but my tax bill went up. It’s just a lot happening right now.”

Lawmakers should launch a comprehensive review of housing and land-use policies and root out structural changes. We can prevent this housing supply crisis from worsening, if state and local regulations are revised to lower the cost of building homes. Unnecessary red tape drives up construction costs and delays new development, but streamlining the permitting process and updating outdated building codes can help the private market deliver more homes at lower prices.

Modular and alternative home construction must be encouraged. If modular homes can bring costs down through efficiency, why are we not prioritizing them? We need policies that allow for more innovation in housing, not less.

Tax relief for long-term homeowners should be considered. Local governments need to explore tax caps or phased-in assessments for homeowners who have lived in their homes for years. A sudden spike in valuation shouldn’t burden someone with large and unaffordable tax bills. To protect homeowners from tax spikes, Texas passed a law in 2019 capping property tax increases at 3.5% annually for local governments without voter approval

Responsible development that expands supply must be supported. Smart-growth policies should encourage new construction, not restrict it. Without more housing, the supply crisis will only get worse.

One of Texas’ biggest moves was eliminating unnecessary zoning restrictions that limited where homes could be built. Cities like Austin and Houston reduced minimum lot sizes and loosened restrictions on accessory dwelling units (ADUs), making it easier for homeowners to add rental units and increase supply.

The housing summit reinforced one key message — if we don’t fix this imbalance now, we’ll be dealing with the consequences for decades.

Slam dunk hire: NC State welcomes Will Wade as head coach 23 Mar 10:24 AM (11 days ago)

Raleigh, NC – NC State’s McMurray Family Director of Athletics Boo Corrigan has announced that Will Wade, who has led his last five teams to the NCAA Tournament, will be the new head coach of the NC State men’s basketball program.

Wade, who has signed a six-year agreement pending approval by the NC State Board of Trustees, will be formally introduced as the 21st head coach in program history next Tuesday at a private event in Reynolds Coliseum which will be streamed live for the general public at 1 pm on GoPack.com and ACC Network Extra.  Photo opportunities for fans will be available beginning at 3 pm at Coaches’ Corner on the northwest corner of Reynolds Coliseum.

“I am excited and proud that Will Wade will be the next head coach for Wolfpack men’s basketball,” said Corrigan. “I went into this search with an open mind and had great conversations with several outstanding candidates from across the nation. But after speaking extensively with Will and others who know him well, I knew that he was the right leader for the Wolfpack.”

He is a tough coach with proven results on the court and he has grown and improved at every coaching stop. He is known for having great relationships with his players and he will hold them, his staff and himself accountable. Will told me that he believes that he can win at NC State … and ‘win big.’ It didn’t take me too many conversations with him to believe it too.”

“I am beyond excited and honored to be chosen to lead the Wolfpack basketball program,” said Wade. “NC State’s rich tradition, passionate fan base, and location in one of the best cities in the country make this a destination job and I can’t wait to get started. I would like to thank Boo Corrigan and Chancellor Woodson for this awesome opportunity. My family and I look forward to being a part of Wolfpack nation.”

“We are thrilled to welcome Will Wade as the new head coach of NC State Men’s Basketball,” said NC State Chancellor Randy Woodson. “With a proven track record of excellence and a commitment to building a supportive culture for student-athletes, Will is the perfect leader to guide the Pack basketball program to new heights.”

A native of Nashville, Tenn., Wade has previously served as head coach at VCU, LSU and McNeese. He brings 11 years of head coaching experience to the Wolfpack and has led his programs to seven NCAA Tournament berths, including appearances in the last five.

Wade has spent the past two seasons at McNeese, where he led the Cowboys to back-to-back Southland Conference regular season and tournament championships and was named the Southland Conference Coach of the Year both seasons. He compiled a 50-9 record at McNeese, including a 33-1 home record.

He leaves McNeese as the winningest coach in Southland Conference history in terms of winning percentage with a .947mark (36-2) in regular season conference contests.

The 42-year-old served as head coach at LSU for five seasons (2017-2022), leading the Tigers to a Southeastern Conference regular season championship in 2019. LSU advanced to four post-season tournaments (including consecutive NCAA Tournaments in 2019, 2021 and 2022) during his tenure and in 2021 advanced to the SEC Tournament championship game for the first time since 1993.

In his last four seasons (2019-22) with the Tigers, his squads won 48 regular season SEC games, tied for the second-most of any team over that period.

LSU won 20 games or more in three of his five seasons and Wade finished his time at LSU with a record of 105-51, including a 55-33 SEC mark during that time. His 105 wins ranked him as the fourth-winningest coach in LSU Basketball history.

Prior to LSU, Wade spent two seasons at VCU, where he directed the Rams to a 51-20 record and two NCAA Tournament appearances in 2015-2016 and 2016-2017. His 2016 squad advanced to the second round of the tournament, defeating seventh-seed Oregon State before losing to Oklahoma. That season, Wade was the youngest head coach to appear in the NCAA Tournament.

The Rams posted a 28-8 league record over his two years in the Atlantic 10, posting 14-4 records both years. The team was 25-11 in 2016 and earned a share of the Atlantic 10 Conference regular season crown. The 2017 team won 26 games and finished second in the league.

Wade began his collegiate head coaching career as the head coach at Chattanooga for the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons.

His first Mocs squad went 18-15 in 2014, finishing 12-6 and second in regular-season Southern Conference play. The 18 wins overall were the most by the program since 2008-09 and the 12 wins in league play were the highest total since 2010-11. Wade was honored with the Anton Foy Southern Conference Coach of the Year award for his efforts in 2014.

The Mocs won 22 games in 2015 and finished 15-3 in the league as Wade guided Chattanooga to its first 20-win season since 2004-05. He finished his two seasons there at 40-25 and 27-7 in league play. In the two seasons prior to his arrival, Chattanooga was 24-40 overall and 13-23 in the SoCon.

A four-year student manager (2002-05) at Clemson, Wade started his coaching career with the Tigers as a graduate assistant (2005-06) and director of basketball operations (2006-07).

He left Clemson in 2007 to become an assistant coach at Harvard and spent two years with the Crimson (2007-09) before heading to VCU as an assistant coach from 2009-13.

Wade is married to the former Lauren Deason of Charlotte, N.C., and the couple has one daughter, Caroline.

Hubert Davis faces challenges building a new Tar Heels basketball squad 23 Mar 5:59 AM (11 days ago)

Chapel Hill, NC – As the University of North Carolina (UNC) Tar Heels face a pivotal offseason following their recent NCAA tournament exit, speculation swirls about player retention and potential roster changes. With the transfer portal opening soon, the focus shifts to which players will return and how the coaching staff will strategize to rebuild the team for the upcoming season.

The End of an Era

The UNC Tar Heels concluded their season with a disappointing loss to Ole Miss in the NCAA tournament, marking the end of a challenging year that saw highs and lows for the team. With the season’s end comes the inevitable discussions about player futures, as the NCAA transfer portal opens its doors for athletes seeking new opportunities. This year, the uncertainty surrounding player decisions is heightened, as many players grapple with their options in a rapidly evolving college basketball landscape.

The Emotional Toll of Defeat

In the aftermath of the loss, emotions ran high in the locker room. Players like Seth Trimble expressed their deep connection to the program, stating, “I absolutely want to come back to this school. I’m a Tar Heel.” This statement comes amidst rumors regarding potential transfers among players. He has been a significant contributor to the team, finishing the season as the third-leading scorer, averaging notable points and rebounds Such sentiments resonate strongly within the fanbase, as supporters hope to see key players return to build upon their experiences from the past season.

However, the reality of college athletics is that decisions must be made based on a variety of factors, including personal aspirations and professional opportunities.

Key Players and Their Prospects

As speculation mounts regarding who will return next season, several players stand out in discussions about their future.

Seth Trimble: A Potential Cornerstone

Seth Trimble’s performance this season has made him a focal point for the Tar Heels. As one of the team’s best defensive players and a rising offensive talent, Trimble’s return could provide the stability and leadership that UNC desperately needs. His emotional investment in the program is evident, and his desire to continue developing as a player could make him a cornerstone for the future.

Ian Jackson: A First-Round Dream

Conversely, Ian Jackson’s situation is more uncertain. Initially projected as a potential first-round NBA draft pick, Jackson’s performance fluctuated throughout the season. He expressed that he needs to consult with his advisors to evaluate his options moving forward. His decision will likely hinge on feedback from the league rather than his recent performance.

Drake Powell: Room for Growth

Drake Powell’s future also hangs in the balance. While he has shown flashes of potential, questions remain about his readiness for the next level. Powell himself admitted that he hasn’t given much thought to his future yet, but his development over the off-season could be crucial for his prospects, both at UNC and beyond.

The Impact of the Transfer Portal

With the transfer portal opening imminently, the Tar Heels must be proactive in assessing their roster needs. The landscape of college basketball has changed dramatically, with programs increasingly relying on transfers to bolster their squads. As Hubert Davis, the head coach, navigates this new reality, he faces the challenge of balancing player retention with the need to bring in fresh talent.

A Shift in Strategy

The shift towards a more transactional model in college basketball means that coaches must continuously recruit their own players while also seeking new talent from outside the program. This approach has been exemplified by rival programs, such as Duke, which have successfully utilized the portal to enhance their rosters. Davis will need to adopt a similar strategy to ensure UNC remains competitive.

A Broader Perspective on the ACC

The recent struggles of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) have raised concerns about the league’s overall competitiveness. With three ACC teams eliminated in the first round of the NCAA tournament, questions about the conference’s leadership and direction have surfaced. The need for a strong voice to advocate for ACC programs is more critical than ever, as the league grapples with its identity in a rapidly changing college basketball environment.

The Case for Stronger Leadership

As discussions about the future of the ACC unfold, many believe that new leadership is necessary to address the challenges facing the conference. Calls for a more aggressive approach to recruiting and marketing are growing louder, with some suggesting that the ACC needs to adopt strategies similar to those employed by the Southeastern Conference (SEC) to remain relevant.

Looking Ahead

As the UNC Tar Heels prepare for an uncertain offseason, the focus will be on player retention, recruitment, and the overall direction of the program. With key players like Seth Trimble expressing a strong desire to return and others weighing their options, the coming weeks will be crucial in shaping the team’s future.

The landscape of college basketball is evolving, and the Tar Heels must adapt to remain competitive. As the transfer portal opens, fans will be watching closely to see how the coaching staff navigates these changes. Ultimately, the decisions made in the coming days will have lasting implications for UNC basketball.

For the first time in several years, Chatham County Schools exceeded growth expectations, ranking 15th in the state for third through eighth-grade reading—a significant leap from 48th place just seven years ago. The district also saw improvements in high school performance, with English II scores ranking 13th statewide.

Dr. Jackson emphasized the importance of distinguishing between growth and achievement, noting that while some schools did not meet growth targets, the overall performance across the district was commendable. “We want every student healthy, whole, and productive,” he stated, underscoring the district’s commitment to support for all learners.

Consistent Improvement Across Schools

The data highlighted that 100% of schools in the district met or exceeded growth expectations, showcasing a collective effort towards academic excellence. Schools like Virginia Cross have been recognized as outliers, consistently exceeding growth for nine consecutive years despite challenges, such as 95% of students entering kindergarten unprepared.

Dr. Jackson pointed out that the growth index for schools is crucial for understanding performance. Anything above a 2.0 is considered exceeding growth, while scores below -2.0 indicate a need for improvement. He noted that the district’s schools have been actively working to address these disparities and ensure that all students are given the opportunity to succeed.

Graduation Rates on the Rise

The district’s graduation rates reflect this upward trend, with a reported rate of 89.7% for the current year, rounded up to 90% by the state. The five-year cohort graduation rate also stands at 90%, indicating that the district is committed to supporting all students, regardless of their timeline for graduation. Dr. Jackson emphasized the importance of tracking these rates, stating, “We don’t throw anyone away; every single person has the ability to be successful.”

Anticipating Population Increases

As the community continues to grow, so too does the demand for educational resources. Dr. Jackson shared projections indicating an expected increase of approximately 5,300 students over the next decade, contingent upon resolving ongoing water issues in the area. With demographers labeling these growth projections as “extremely conservative,” the district is preparing for a significant influx of students.

Plans are already in motion to accommodate this growth, including the construction of a new elementary school in North Village and the addition of modular classrooms at Pollard School.

Addressing Infrastructure Needs

The district’s facilities are also undergoing improvements to meet the demands of a growing student population. Gymnasiums at Bennett, Bonlee, and Silk Hope schools are in the process of being upgraded, ensuring that students have access to modern facilities that enhance their educational experience. Dr. Jackson acknowledged the nostalgia associated with older buildings but emphasized the need for progress, stating, “We can do better.”

Supporting Community and Workforce Development

With nearly 60% of educators living outside Chatham County, Dr. Jackson highlighted the challenges of competitive compensation, affordable housing, and child care as barriers to attracting and retaining quality teachers. He stressed the importance of community support in addressing these issues, urging residents to consider the long-term implications of a strong local education system.

“We have to decide if that’s the kind of community we want for our kids, because right now they’re their teachers are going to the grocery store in Durham and Raleigh and Ashboro,” he said, calling for collaboration among stakeholders to create solutions that benefit both educators and families.

Fostering Communication Among Schools

Dr. Jackson expressed a desire to open lines of communication with other educational entities in the area, emphasizing that all schools serve the same students. He believes that collaboration can lead to better outcomes for children and families, stating that he wants to have that conversation about what choices we are offering our families.

His experience in both traditional public schools and charter schools has shaped his approach, as he aims to promote high-quality education regardless of the school type. “I am anti-bad school; I want good schools for our kids,” he declared.

Preparing Students for the Future

In an era marked by rapid technological advancements, Dr. Jackson emphasized the necessity of preparing students for a world that includes artificial intelligence and digital literacy. “We can’t prepare our kids for the school systems that we had; we have to prepare them for the world that is changing,” he stated.

This commitment to innovation extends to curriculum development, with a focus on equipping students with the skills needed to navigate and succeed in a digital landscape.

As Chatham County Schools continue to navigate growth and challenges, Superintendent Dr. Anthony Jackson remains optimistic about the future. He believes that the opportunities for improvement and success far outweigh the obstacles. “Our school system is stable, it’s strong, and it’s getting better every day,” he affirmed.

N.C. Forest Service implements statewide burn ban 21 Mar 3:32 AM (13 days ago)

Raleigh, NC – Due to increased fire risk, the N.C. Forest Service has issued a ban on all open burning and has canceled all burning permits statewide effective 8 a.m. Friday, March 21, until further notice.

“It is spring wildfire season in North Carolina, and we are seeing wildfire activity increase due to dry conditions,” said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. “With these ongoing conditions, a statewide burn ban is necessary to reduce the risk of wildfires starting and spreading quickly. Our top priority is always to protect lives, property and forestland across the state. It is imperative that folks adhere to this burn ban until further notice.”

Under North Carolina law, the ban prohibits all open burning in all 100 counties in this instance, regardless of whether a permit was previously issued. The issuance of any new permits has also been suspended until the ban is lifted. Anyone violating the burn ban faces a $100 fine plus $183 court costs. Any person responsible for setting a fire may be liable for any expenses related to extinguishing the fire.

The burn ban does not apply to fires started within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling. A local fire marshal has authority to issue a burn ban within that 100 feet space.

Local fire departments and law enforcement officers are assisting the N.C. Forest Service in enforcing the burn ban.

The N.C. Forest Service will continue to monitor conditions. Residents with questions regarding a specific county can contact their N.C. Forest Service county ranger or their county fire marshal’s office.

Answers to FAQ

Q: What is open burning?

A: Open burning includes burning leaves, branches or other plant material. In all cases, burning trash, lumber, tires, newspapers, plastics or other nonvegetative material is illegal.

Q: May I still use my grill or barbecue?

A: Yes, if no other local ordinances prohibit their use.

Q: How should I report a wildfire?

A: Call 911 to report a wildfire.

Q: How should I report a person who intentionally starts a wildfire?

A: Call 911 to report a wildfire.

Q: My local fire marshal has also issued a burn ban for my county. What does this mean?

A: The burn ban issued by the N.C. Forest service does not apply to a fire within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling. Local government agencies have jurisdiction over open burning within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling. The N.C. Forest Service has advised county fire marshals of the burning ban and has asked for their consideration of also implementing a burning ban. If a fire within a 100-foot area of a dwelling escapes containment, a North Carolina forest ranger may take reasonable steps to extinguish or control it. The person responsible for setting the fire may be liable for any expenses related to extinguishing the fire.

Q: Are there other instances which impact open burning?

A: Local ordinances and air quality regulations may impact open burning. For instance, outdoor burning is prohibited in areas covered by Code Orange or Code Red air quality forecasts. Learn more about air quality forecasts at https://deq.nc.gov/about/divisions/air-quality/air-qualityoutreach-education/air-quality-forecasts.

Q: Can I have a campfire when I go camping?

A: Campfires would be considered open burning and are not exempt from the burn ban. During a burn ban, portable gas stoves or grills are alternate methods for cooking food while camping.

Q: What can I do to protect my house against the risk of wildfire?

A: Learn about wildfire risk assessments and preparedness and prevention plans on the N.C. Forest Service website at https://www.ncforestservice.gov/fire_control/fc_wui.htm or https://www.resistwildfirenc.org/.

Remembering Jim Valvano: The legacy of NC State’s charismatic coach and cancer advocate 20 Mar 7:17 PM (13 days ago)

By Gene Galin

Raleigh, NC – Jim Valvano, the charismatic former head coach of the North Carolina State University men’s basketball team, remains an indelible figure in the world of college sports. Known for his infectious humor, passionate coaching style, and heartfelt advocacy for cancer research, Valvano’s legacy transcends the basketball court. I had an opportunity to sit down with Tim Peeler and have a conversation about Valvano’s multifaceted career, his profound impact on players and fans alike, and the enduring significance of the V Foundation he established to combat cancer. As Tim recounts his experiences with Valvano, it becomes clear that his legacy is as much about the man as it is about the game.

The Rise of a Coaching Icon

Early Years and Coaching Career

Jim Valvano was born on March 10, 1946, in New York City. He attended Rutgers University, where he played basketball and later transitioned into coaching. His coaching career began at Iona College, where he quickly garnered attention for his energetic style and ability to connect with players. In 1980, he took the helm at NC State, a decision that would forever change the landscape of college basketball.

Valvano’s coaching philosophy was rooted in his belief in the importance of teamwork, resilience, and the ability to overcome adversity. Under his leadership, the NC State Wolfpack achieved remarkable success, culminating in a stunning national championship victory in 1983. The team, often considered an underdog, defied expectations and captured the hearts of fans across the nation.

Valvano: The Charismatic Coach

Jim Valvano, often referred to as “Jimmy V,” was a dominant presence in any room he entered. His larger-than-life personality and quick wit made him a beloved figure, particularly during his tenure as the head coach of the NC State Wolfpack. Peeler, who began covering college basketball in the mid-1980s, describes Valvano as a “force of nature” who thrived on the attention that came with his success in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).

Valvano’s opening press conference at NC State set the tone for his career. He famously quipped, “Hey, I’m from Iona,” a line he would repeat throughout his career. His humor and storytelling ability allowed him to connect with both players and reporters, making him a unique figure in the world of sports. Peeler recalls Valvano’s knack for crafting memorable one-liners, which contributed to his reputation as both a coach and a public speaker.

A Unique Personality

Valvano was not just a coach; he was a larger-than-life personality. Known for his quick wit and memorable one-liners, he could effortlessly charm audiences and media alike. His opening press conference at NC State set the tone for his tenure, as he famously quipped about his youth and experience, establishing a rapport that would define his interactions with the press.

As a coach, Valvano was deeply passionate about the game, often using humor to diffuse tension and motivate his players. His ability to read the room and connect with people made him a beloved figure in the world of sports. However, his emotional nature also meant that he faced challenges, especially during periods of scrutiny and investigation into his program.

The Emotional Side of Coaching

While Valvano was known for his humor, he also displayed significant emotional depth. Peeler shares a poignant memory of Valvano’s reaction to the tragic death of basketball star Len Bias in 1986. As a reporter, Peeler had the difficult task of informing Valvano about Bias’s passing. Witnessing Valvano’s raw emotion in that moment highlighted the human side of the coach, a side that often went unnoticed amid the pressures of college basketball.

Valvano’s emotional range was evident in both triumph and tragedy. He experienced the high of winning the 1983 national championship and the low of losing a crucial game against Georgetown in 1989. Peeler’s firsthand accounts of these moments reveal the complexities of Valvano’s character—he was not just a coach but a passionate individual who cared deeply about his players.

Strategic Coach and Media Relations

Valvano’s strategic approach extended beyond the basketball court. He understood the importance of media relations and often used interviews as a platform to shape public perception of his team. Peeler recalls how Valvano was always keen to engage with reporters, recognizing that their portrayal of him and his players could influence their success.

During a particularly challenging time for NC State, when the program faced scrutiny and investigations, Valvano’s charm and openness were put to the test. He struggled to maintain his persona while navigating the complexities of media coverage and public opinion. Peeler notes that Valvano’s ability to read a room and engage with others was a key part of his strategy, allowing him to connect with both fans and the media.

Triumphs and Tribulations

The National Championship and Aftermath

The 1983 NCAA Championship remains one of the most iconic moments in college basketball history. Valvano’s team, led by players like Derek Whittenberg and Lorenzo Charles, pulled off a series of upsets to claim the title. Valvano’s exuberant celebration on the court became a defining image of his career.

However, the triumph was followed by challenges. The late 1980s brought scrutiny to the NC State program, with allegations of rule violations and NCAA investigations. Valvano struggled to maintain his trademark humor and openness during this tumultuous period, which ultimately led to his dismissal from the university in 1990.

The Transition to Broadcasting and the V Foundation

After his tenure at NC State ended amid controversy, Valvano transitioned to broadcasting, where he continued to shine. His natural charisma and ability to communicate complex basketball strategies made him a sought-after commentator. He brought a unique perspective to the game, blending analysis with his signature humor. Valvano’s broadcasting career allowed him to reach a broader audience, further solidifying his status as a beloved figure in sports. However, it was his battle with cancer that ultimately defined his legacy.

A New Mission: The V Foundation

Facing Cancer

In 1992, Valvano faced the most significant challenge of his life when he was diagnosed with cancer. Rather than succumbing to despair, he used his diagnosis as a catalyst for change. Valvano famously declared, “Don’t give up, don’t ever give up,” during his emotional speech at the 1993 ESPY Awards. This moment became a rallying cry for cancer awareness and research.

Establishing the V Foundation

Motivated by his personal battle with cancer, Valvano established the V Foundation for Cancer Research in 1993. The foundation aimed to fund innovative cancer research and support early-career researchers. With the help of friends, family, and supporters, the V Foundation has raised millions of dollars for cancer research, making significant strides in the fight against the disease.

Valvano’s legacy continues through the foundation, which has funded groundbreaking research and initiatives. His vision of a world without cancer resonates with countless individuals and families affected by the disease.

Valvano’s Enduring Legacy

A Complex Character

Jim Valvano was a complex individual, embodying the highs and lows of life in the public eye. He was not just a coach; he was a mentor, a friend, and a beacon of hope for many. His ability to connect with people on a personal level made him a cherished figure in the hearts of fans and players alike.

Despite facing criticism and challenges throughout his career, Valvano’s resilience and determination shone through. He taught valuable lessons about perseverance, the importance of laughter, and the power of human connection.

Recognition and Honors

Valvano’s contributions to basketball and cancer research have been recognized through numerous awards and honors. In 2013, he was posthumously inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as a contributor, solidifying his legacy as one of the most influential figures in the sport.

Today, Jim Valvano is remembered not only for his achievements as a coach and broadcaster but also for his contributions to cancer research. The V Foundation has funded numerous groundbreaking studies and initiatives, making significant strides in the fight against cancer. Peeler reflects on how Valvano’s image transformed from a controversial figure in college basketball to a beloved advocate for cancer research.

As Peeler concludes his reflections on Valvano, he emphasizes the profound impact the coach had on those around him. Valvano’s legacy is a testament to the power of resilience, humor, and compassion. His story serves as a reminder that even in the face of adversity, one can make a lasting difference in the lives of others.

A Legacy of Inspiration

Jim Valvano’s life and career were marked by triumphs and tribulations, but his spirit remains a source of inspiration for many. As Tim Peeler’s account illustrates, Valvano was more than just a basketball coach; he was a complex individual whose passion for life and unwavering determination continue to resonate. The V Foundation stands as a testament to his legacy, reminding us all to never give up in the face of challenges. Valvano’s story is a powerful reminder that one person’s voice can change the world, both on and off the court.
