A Busy Tool Library Month! 9 Aug 2018 10:39 AM (6 years ago)

July 13 & 14, 2018 - Many residents in Provo's Timp Neighborhood pulled together to come out and dig trenches and install a sprinkler system in the 300 West and 300 North cross streets. In addition, other yard projects were worked on in the neighborhood. The projects took two days and was a weekend collaborative. Habitat provided our Mobile Tool Library, which helped residents whip through the tasks which would have otherwise taken a lot longer.

July 24, 2018 - For many of us in the State of Utah, we enjoy having the 24th of July off. However, for those who work for companies headquartered outside the State, the 24th is just another work day. Employees at the Utah Valley Convention Center found a way to turn their day on into an opportunity to give back to the community. Habitat provided our Mobile Tool Library and the volunteers cleaned up weeds and boarders around the 300 West and 700 South cross streets, which is a place for businesses, residents, and a community garden.

July 30, 2018 - We had several members of the Provo 228th LDS YSA Ward come out and help revitalize Provo's North Park neighborhood. Volunteers, along with neighborhood residents, cleaned up a community garden and pulled weeds and picked up trash around the 800 North and 600 West area.

A "Magical" Evening of Success! 27 Jul 2018 3:47 PM (6 years ago)

Habitat for Humanity of Utah County celebrated and recapped its "magical" fiscal year at our Annual Meeting on Thursday at the Utah Valley Home Builders Association in Orem. In addition to highlighting this past fiscal year’s successes and introducing our "beyond measure" theme, the local Habitat affiliate also showed appreciation to this past year’s Executive Committee and elected our new Executive Team.

Special thanks to Tara Riddle, Sariah Hillam, Eric Bennett, Jeanne Walker, Chuck Irwin, and Kenny Seng for their outstanding efforts over the past year. Due to our upcoming management transition, the same Executive Committee was elected to continue serving for the next several months.

In addition, at the meeting, Habitat also surprised and recognized two of its employees for their dedication to our mission in the community. Construction Assistant, Scotty White, was honored as the Employee of the Year, and Orem ReStore Warehouse Manager, Brian Viall, was selected as the ReStore Employee of the Year. Both are very deserving of this honor. They are hard workers and always go beyond the call of duty in their respective positions.

The volunteers also started building the carport. We love our partnership with Well Fargo and appreciate their continued support!

A BUSY LIBRARY! 19 Jun 2018 10:39 AM (6 years ago)

Habitat's Provo Mobile Tool Library has been well used over the last several weeks. The Library was used at neighborhood clean-ups in the Franklin and North Park neighborhoods and to clean up and install drip systems at Habitat's TyeRay Community Garden. And just last week, 85 local scouts borrowed the Mobile Library to work at the Provo's Franklin Neighborhood communal garden. The scouts learned techniques of hand tilling and composting, as well as how to facilitate in natural systems of organic gardening. They also learned team building skills as they moved heavy dead tree logs by hand, typically moved by bobcats and tractors, to create a log barrier along the north boarder of the garden. The Library is free to use for all Provo residents. Look on line at https://www.habitatuc.org/mobileToolLibrary.htm to schedule or for more information.

Habitat for Humanity of Utah County is partnering again this year with the Utah County Health Department to bring awareness about the dangers of radon gas and the importance of testing to the community. The organizations are sponsoring an informational garage booth inside one of the Utah Valley Parade of Homes homes, built by Chatwin Homes, in Provo from June 7-23, 2018. We also are providing "green" booties for those touring the home. Green is the color used to promote radon nationally. We appreciate the Utah Valley Home Builders Association for generously providing us the booth free of charge. It is a great opportunity to share information about the cancer causing gas and encourage testing. To find out more about radon, look online at www.habitatuc.org/radon.htm.

Fixing It! 5 Jun 2018 2:08 PM (6 years ago)

Habitat for Humanity of Utah County joined the Utah Recycling Alliance to host a Fix It Clinic at the Orem ReStore on Wednesday. “Fix-It Clinics” are designed to empower participates to become better stewards of their material belongings and reduce waste. Participants bring in broken items that they would like to learn how to repair and have the opportunity to work side-by-side with an experienced Repair Coach.

Coaches for Wednesday's event included Austin Taylor, Director at the Provo Bike Collective, Dustin Caldwell, a general repair specialist, and Joe Jarrett, a local contractor. The coaches helped those in attendance to fix a rake, scale, and chair, and to tune up some bicycles. Participants also received discounts in the ReStore that evening.

We would like to thank Utah Recycling Alliance member, Sarah Bateman, for bringing the idea to us and helping to plan the event. We would also give our appreciation to the repair coaches for their service and for donating their time. We are hoping to grow the clinics and hold them at least quarterly. We also need more coaches! The next Clinic will be in September. Watch for details!

Habitat Kicks Off Women Build During Rainstorm! 23 May 2018 9:42 AM (6 years ago)

The rain didn't stop Habitat and the Elton/Morgan family from kicking off Habitat's second annual Women Build Home in Springville last Monday. Instead of shoveling "mud", Nacole Morgan and her friends and family joined Women Build participants and others in the Springville City Council Chambers for a short program and then launched balloons outside the Springville Civic Center to celebrate the start of their new home. Following the event, everyone enjoyed shaved ice from Kona Ice. Special thanks to Springville Community Development Director, Glen Goins, for his inspiring words and for helping us move locations at the last minute.

The four bedroom, two bathroom, two story home, located at 243 South 400 West, Springville, will be built with at least 75 percent local women, and will be sold to Morgan and her four young sons. The home will be the local Habitat affiliate’s 71st Utah Valley home and Habitat's second full Women Build Home.

Women Build is Habitat for Humanity’s program for women who want to learn construction skills and build homes and communities. This program brings together women from all walks of life to address the housing crisis facing millions of women and children worldwide.

Local women are still being sought to help build the home. To register or to find out more, please look on line at https://habitatuc.org/womenBuildCircleOf100.htm.

Well-Known Female Contractor, Local Women Frame Floor on Lehi Habitat Home as Part of National Women Build Week 14 May 2018 12:12 PM (6 years ago)

To help kick off National Women Build Week locally, several volunteers and Habitat supporters joined well-known female general contractor, Sallie Bradshaw, her 86 year old mother, Shirley, and members of her family on Saturday to frame the floor on a five-bedroom Habitat home currently being built in partnership with Armando and Roberta Sandoval and their five children in Lehi, Utah.

In addition to framing, local volunteers enjoyed a Cinco de Mayo themed meal, sponsored by Costa Vida Lehi, and were entertained by Mariachi Los Pumas of BYU during lunch time. It was a fun and productive day.

National Women Build Week, a nationwide initiative created by Habitat for Humanity and Lowe’s in 2008. is held the week leading up to Mother’s Day with Lowe’s generously donating nearly $2 million dollars and volunteer support. Hosting the event during this week reinforces the message that every woman can make a difference through learning and using construction skills. The annual initiative has brought together more than 117,000 all-women construction volunteers to build or repair homes with nearly 5,000 families over the past 10 years.

KSL and the Deseret News covered Saturday's volunteer day. Check out the links at https://www.ksl.com/?sid=46314926&nid=148&title=women-gather-to-build-homes-for-charity and https://www.deseretnews.com/article/900017860/utah-county-women-gather-to-build-homes-for-
