84th Agricultural Exhibition (AG Show) 17 Mar 6:14 AM (16 days ago)

Inland Adventures, Experience the Island this April

Bermuda Agricultural Exhibition

The first Agricultural Exhibition was held in 1843 at Mount Langton, Pembroke. Governor Reid arranged the show to stimulate interest in local Agriculture. This same year, ploughing was first introduced to Bermuda. The farm horse class in the Annual Exhibition required horses to use the plough until 1992.

The Agricultural Exhibition did not become an annual event until 1955. Before this time, the show was held bi-annually and even cancelled in 1934.

The Agricultural Exhibition was first held in the Botanical Gardens in 1922, where it continues to be hosted to this day. Over the years, the Annual Exhibition has seen many changes, yet it continues to be one of the most important and widely anticipated events on Bermuda’s cultural calendar.

In the 21st century, the Bermuda Annual Exhibition is an icon of Bermuda tradition. This event has the mandate to provide an educational and fun environment to embrace its agricultural heritage by providing a venue for local residents to display livestock, fruits, vegetables, baked goods, woodcraft, floriculture and educational displays.

The 84th Bermuda Agricultural Exhibition will take place at Botanical Gardens on April 24 – 26, 2025

The Peppercorn Ceremony: Experience a Bermudian tradition 200 years in the making

Annual Peppercorn Ceremony

Wednesday April 23, 2025 | 10:30AM | King’s Square

The Peppercorn Ceremony began in 1816 when Bermuda’s capital was moved from the Town of St. George to Hamilton.  The old State House, built in 1620, had been used by Bermuda’s parliament and cabinet up until that time and was offered to be rented by Bermuda’s Freemasons.  An agreement was made that the annual rent would amount to that of one peppercorn which set the foundation for an annual celebration by the Freemasons to mark the paying of the rent.

Each year, Freemasons, members of Bermuda’s Parliament and the Governor gather to participate in the ceremony of the Freemasons presenting a peppercorn on a silver platter to the Governor as rent.

The ceremony begins with the town crier bellowing and ringing his bell introducing the various dignitaries.   The Governor and his wife arrive by horse drawn carriage which is marked by a 17 gun salute by the Royal Bermuda Regimental Band.  The Governor, dressed in traditional ceremonial attire inspects a military guard of honor while the band plays and then, on behalf of the government, accepts the peppercorn as payment for the year’s rent.

Following the ceremony there is a garden party hosted by the Mayor of St. George’s at nearby Somers Garden.

This event is open to the public and does not require registration.  However there is a Peppercorn Ceremony Celebration Package on offer if you would like to reserve seating, to have access to the exclusive garden party, the opportunity to mingle with local dignitaries and attend a Private tour of the State House.

Whale Watching in Bermuda 12 Mar 4:00 AM (21 days ago)

Photography by Andrew Stevenson

A trip to Bermuda in March or April just wouldn’t be complete without experiencing a once in a lifetime Whale Watching tour or even just learning a little more about the whales that migrate past our island. Two hundred miles surrounding the island is secured as the Exclusive Economic Zone which is protected under the order of the Fisheries Act, where whales of different species (humpback, blue, northern as well as dolphins) can be seen inhabit our waters. The whales are on their annual migration north, along the Gulf Stream, heading to the nutrient rich Arctic water. During this time, it is common to see them appear not just along the surface, but even flicking their tail as they dive into the depths or breaching spectacularly in the air.

To learn more about our whales and the work of Andrew Stevenson click here.

Photography by Andrew Stevenson

You can often catch a glimpse of these majestic creatures from land, specifically from Bermuda’s South Shore Coast we recommend West Whale Bay Park on Whale Bay Rd, click here for the mapThere are various points to stop along South Shore and you can access them on your Bermuda motor bike, Bermuda Car Rental or by riding the Bermuda bus. However, Whale-Watching by land would require much patience, not to mention a good pair of binoculars.

It is safe to say that the best way to see these beautiful creatures is on the water, where you can enjoy a safe and respectful whale watching tour.

There are various tours which take you off shore to see the whales in their natural habitat. An excellent option is with Island Tour Centre. With over 20 years of local experience, and a veteran whale watching crew, you can guarantee responsible wildlife viewing of the incredible humpback whale. Island Tour Centre are dedicated and adhere to internationally recognized whale watching guidelines and best practices. With three boats to choose from, from a 45ft custom motor boat to a 60ft power catamaran, Island Tour Centre provides amazing opportunities to see one of mother nature’s most glorious creatures.

Bermuda Gombey Dancers 23 Oct 2024 8:24 AM (5 months ago)

Gomeys by Akil Simmons

About Bermuda’s Gombeys

Bermuda’s Gombey dancers are a cultural icon reflective of Bermuda’s blend of African, West Indian, Native American and British culture. They appear in local Bermuda neighbourhoods on holidays such as Boxing Day and Good Friday, and participate in the Bermuda Day Parade, unmissable in their vibrant costumes and masks, accompanied by energetic drummers.

The Gombeys we see today are a result of talents and traditions passed down through the centuries, with multi-generational troupes connected to a particular parish or family. There are similar related traditions in the Bahamas, St. Kitts and other Caribbean islands; however the Bermudian Gombey was recognized as its own distinct Bermudian art form at a UNESCO Cultural and Conservation Conference in 1970.

The word Gombey is derived from an African word meaning rhythm or drum, and the drummers are an essential part of the performance, often accompanied by a beer-bottle fife. Each troupe has a captain who uses a whistle to instruct the dancers and often carries a whip; chiefs answer to the captain, carry tomahawks and instruct the warriors as they act out a Biblical story or dance solo or in pairs. The vivid costumes feature a tall headdress with peacock feathers, and the decorated capes are unique to each Gombey. If you are lucky enough to hear the drums and witness a Gombey troupe, remember to throw coins as a sign of appreciation.

Where to see Bermudian Gombey Troupes

Look for the Gombeys at the following venues:

Harbour Nights Street Festival – Front Street, Hamilton, 7 to 10 pm, Wednesdays, May through August.

Bermuda Day Parade – Hamilton, last Friday in May.

Boxing Day, December 26th – in local neighbourhoods.

Good Friday – in local neighbourhoods.

Gombey Festival 2024 – Saturday, October 26, 2024

Chasing Lobster Tail – Panulirus Argus 18 Sep 2024 4:10 AM (6 months ago)

Chasing Lobster Tail – Panulirus Argus

The Spiny Lobster is surrounded by myth, some of which may be related to its long and arduous life history. In Bermuda, spiny lobster mate mid-April to mid-May, and in June egg-bearing females move to the edge of the reef platform (50-100meters below sea level) to spawn… Of around the one million eggs which each female releases, only a handful survive these four years of odyssey and metamorphosis to close the reproductive cycle. Although scientists assume that the phyllosoma stage must develop offshore and take as long as a year or two, some local fisherman insist that in the olden days, when female lobsters could legally be held in inshore ponds during spawning season, there was always a surfeit of small juveniles.

The most intriguing aspect of spiny lobster behavior is their tendency to get together and migrate in single file, nose-to-tail, into deeper waters. Initially suspected to have to do with reproduction, this mass exodus, which usually happens after the first autumn storm, is now seen as akin to bird migrations, a move to get away from the cold and stormy winter conditions in shallow water. And why do they follow one another? Like racing cyclist: to reduce the drag.

Fisherman had, of course, known about these lobster/walks for centuries, long before scientists got wind of it. Maybe they also know about lobster recruitment. Maybe scientists ought to listen to fisherman a little more patiently, and carefully. Although they seem an unruly lot at times, being thee proud survivors of our human heritage of hunting and gathering, their intimate knowledge of the ways of creatures and tides continues to be a vast untapped resource.

Cyril Chesterfield Eston & The World War 1 Deployment of the Bermuda Militia Artillery 10 Sep 2024 10:07 AM (6 months ago)

Bermuda Militia Artillery

Do you know about Cyril Chesterfield Eston & the World War I deployment of the Bermuda Militia Artillery?

By Horst Augustinovic

When the United Kingdom declared war with Germany on August 4th 1914, the Bermuda Militia Artillery was already in camp for their annual 41 days of training in St. George’s. There were 189 militia and 3 regular ranks, as well as 5 militia and 2 regular officers. By August 6th the B.M.A. moved to various designated stations and began digging positions. From January 1915 Captain T.M. Dill took command of the B.M.A.

In November 1915 news reached Bermuda that British military authorities would accept a Contingent from the Bermuda Militia Artillery and Captain Dill, together with Lieutenants S. Hamilton and H.C. Smith, as well over 100 men volunteered for overseas service. After intensive training the Contingent was attested in the Royal Garrison Artillery and ready for embarkation in late April 1916.

Known as the Bermuda Battery R.G.A., the Contingent left Bermuda on May 28th, 1916, and on arrival in Devonport, was immediately deployed to France where they arrived on June 24th. Consisting of 4 Officers and 206 other ranks, the unit was split into 4 detachments and deployed as follows: Major Dill at Bouzincourt; Lt. Hamilton at Raincheval; Lt. Smith at Soult Dump near Albert and 2nd Lt. Gosling at Corby sur Somme. They all took part in the attack on the Somme on July 1st, 1916.

Having fought on the Somme throughout the summer and fall of 1916, the Bermuda Contingent was moved to Abancourt to recuperate and later to Marseilles were it handled stevedoring and harbour work. In April 1917 the unit moved to Bruay and Villiers au Bois where it took part in the attack on Vimy Ridge on April 9th. The next move was to the 52nd Heavy Artillery Brigade at Le Don Camp near Ploegsteert on May 23rd where several men were wounded and gassed during the attack on Messines-Wytschaete Ridge on June 7th.

From mid-June to late-October the Bermuda Contingent was located between Brandhoek and Vlammertainghe, handling ammunition at the advanced dumps which were subject to shelling during the day and bombing at night, causing several casualties. Having been reinforced by 40 men, the unit was next moved to St. Jean near Ypres, working on ammunition supply in preparation for the attack on Passchaendaele. By mid-January 1918 the unit was moved to the rest station at Barentin near Rouen and in early July was again moved to the Front, at first to Aire and later to Belgium where it remained until the Armistice.

Field Marshall Sir Douglas Haig’s Report on the Bermuda Contingent of the Royal Garrison Artillery included the following: “They were employed on Heavy Ammunition Dumps and great satisfaction was expressed with their work. Though called upon to perform labour of the most arduous and exacting nature at all times of the day and night, they were not only willing and efficient but conspicuous for their cheeriness under all conditions.”

Bermuda Militia Artillery

Cyril Chesterfield Eston, photographed in France
during World War I.

Cyril Chesterfield Eston was 17 years old when he joined the Bermuda Militia Artillery in 1914. This photograph, taken in France during the war, shows him with the single stripe of a Lance Bombardier to which he has added cross hatching, which was very fashionable at the time! He is wearing the 1907 Pattern Service Dress featuring box pleats on the breast pockets and reinforced ‘rifle’ patches on the chest, between the pockets and the epaulets. His bandolier is the 5 pouch version of the 1903 Pattern Leather Equipment.  This was obsolete in the infantry by 1914 but was still issued to cavalry, artillery and engineers.  Unusually he is wearing the securing strap for a second belt, which was worn around the waist with a ‘full set’ but which in practice had by this period been discontinued.  With thanks to Martin Buckley for this detailed information!

Munchies By The Sea 2 Aug 2024 10:31 AM (8 months ago)

Munchies By The Sea

Nestled in the dreamiest setting just slightly East of the St. George’s Town Square overlooking visiting anchored yachts, you’ll find a fun, unique, eclectically designed harbour side eatery featuring authentic Bermudian food, delicious juices and the official home of Richard’s all beef Jonny Dog.

Fish sandwiches, fish nuggets (wahoo), shrimp, fish chowder, Gombey specials (combo’s with seafood), fish cakes, chicken tenders (home-made), hamburgers, chicken burgers, veggie burgers, chicken & fish wraps, macaroni & cheese, peas & rice, Jonny Dog’s, fried apple pie, veggie, chicken and steak patties all made with Jonny Bread, desserts, drinks and more…

alt

Munchies By The Sea is owned and operated by St. George’s native Richard Cain Burchall (head chef) and his lovely wife DeVeene. Richard and DeVeene’s passion as restaurateurs shines brightly from the minute you arrive and seat yourself on their memorable patio. With big smiles and even bigger hearts, the atmosphere welcomes all. With the harbour breeze, music playing and water trickling near by from the patio water fall, this is a place where you can leave everything but your appetite and desire for a good time at the door.

alt

Munchies opened just one year ago and despite the uncertainty with the pandemic still lingering, Munchies has thrived and a year later has a team of two full time chefs and two servers including chef Ernesto Ysip and server Janet Brown.

alt

You might remember Richard from Black Horse Tavern in St. David’s in the later years before it closed, Wahoo’s Bistro on Water Street, or even Sunset Catering. All amazing efforts that led Richard to living his dream of opening his own space.

alt

Munchies is family and pet friendly, they also offer wheel chair access through their main entrance. Parking is available right outside in the main lot just behind the square.

Consider Munchies for your next special event or the perfect place for a kids birthday party.

Richard and DeVeene have dreams of expanding and offering children a fun and safe place to watch big screen movies on weekend nights upstairs on their sky view patio, while adults enjoy a bite downstairs. She envisions games, colouring contests and plenty of fun to keep kids engaged and loving their time at Munchies as they grow up. DeVeene also plans to host Old St David’s Story Telling evenings, in an effort to reveal the history of St David’s, its beloved characters and the secrets of the good life, successes, shenanigans and more.

alt

On Sundays, ask about Richard’s pancake balls. Richard loves to experiment and while you can enjoy simple classics, he invites you to live on the edge and try something new too.

Visit by foot, car, bike, bus, taxi or boat and enjoy quality authentic Bermudian fare made with love by Bermudians.

5 Ways To Soak Up Summer 21 Jul 2024 4:00 AM (8 months ago)

5 Ways To Soak Up Summer

It’s time to really zero in on things to do across the island that involve soaking in the sun, the ocean and enjoying refreshing indulgences before, after and in between. We’ve listed 5 main ideas with a few supporting tips for each. You can email us anytime if your looking for something specific to do.

You can also visit our Events Calendar here.

alt

1. Paddle To Paradise

For just $30/hour ($15 per each additional hour) rent a paddle board or a few from Blue Hole Watersports and plan a day explore Castle Harbour and its islands, one of the most scenic forms of paradise in the world. This is a popular spot for locals especially on the weekends where you will find boats rafted up, a small beach cluttered with kids playing, adventure seekers cliff jumping and some of the most beautiful snorkelling spots around the island. The closest grocery stores are Market Place in Shelly Bay or Somers Supermart in St. George’s where you can pick up a few things to make a light picnic.

Surfing in Bermuda

2. Chill, Swim, Snorkel or Surf Horseshoe Bay Beach

Bermuda is home to 34+ sandy beaches and coves, with the ones along South Shore known for their stunning pink sand, great snorkeling spots and catching a little surf, Bermuda style. Horseshoe Bay is famous worldwide and the kind of beach you’ll want to make a full day experience of. Stop by Makin Waves and pick up everything from sunscreen, snorkel gear, SPF rashguards and more. For more info on surfing in Bermuda…

Isolated Surfboards offers custom boards and equipment, alongside kids’ lessons and camps.

Bermuda Adventure and Surf offers private and group lessons for all ages, alongside surf and adventure camps and after-school programmes.
Contact bermudadventure@gmail.com

Take Bus #7 to get to Horseshoe Bay.

Here are 6 more beaches we are loving this summer.

alt

3. Hit The Water Park in Dockyard!!

Have you checked out the Longtail Floating Fun Park lately? They have a large water slide, as well as a floating obstacle course and a diving board from the 3rd deck! Longtail is open every day from 10:00-6:00 – tickets can be booked at @islandtourcenterbermuda for $27.50 or call 441-232-KIRK for more information! After you’ve soaked up enough sun and ocean, visit Cafe Amici for lunch! You’ll find them on the corner of the Clock Tower Mall. They have the best pizza in Dockyard and a great patio.  A perfect spot for the whole family.

alt

4. Play Hide & Seek At The Unfinished Church, Then Take A Dip Near By At Tobacco Bay

The impressive Gothic vestige that looms over the town of St. George’s was begun in 1870 as a replacement for St. Peter’s, which had fallen into a state of serious disrepair. Designed by William Hay, the Scottish-born architect who later drew the plans for Hamilton’s cathedral, the St. George’s church was abandoned in 1899 when near completion. After your exploring adventures head to Tobacco Bay for a swim and late lunch or just a few summer cocktails with your toes in the sand!

Bus Routes 1, 3, 10 and 11 that operate between Hamilton and St. George’s.

alt

5. Sail Into The Sunset With Captain Nathan Onboard Ana Luna

One of the best ways to soak up sun in Bermuda is to sail into the sunset onboard a catamaran like the Ana Luna with an experienced Captain like Nathan.
The Cost per person is $89, the cruise explores with commentary and the best sunset views on island from 6pm – 8pm.  There is a cash bar available and a drink may be included in purchase. For more information or to book your cruise visit here.

Visit Horseshoe Bay Beach, Bermuda’s Most Famous Beach 23 Jun 2024 4:47 AM (9 months ago)

Horseshoe Bay Beach

Visit Horseshoe Bay Beach, Bermuda’s Most Famous Beach

Listed as one of the best beaches in the world, Horseshoe Bay Beach is the island’s most famous, with soft, salmon-coloured sand juxtaposed against turquoise waters. That’s why it’s also one of Bermuda’s most photographed sites.

Those in the know like to watch the sunrise from high up on the limestone rock cliffs before the crowds arrive. From May to September, the beach does tend to be more crowded with tourists and cruise ship passengers.

And it’s no wonder: the beach has universal appeal. It’s a great place for families because it features a kiddy beach, its staffed by lifeguards and there’s a low tide. You can also buy food and rent umbrellas.

Older beach goers enjoy the large reefs and chance to see varied marine life during snorkelling excursions. There’s lots to do out of the water, too, like jogging, playing volleyball or relaxing.

Address: Horseshoe Road, Off South Road, Southampton Parish, Bermuda

Royal Naval Dockyard – Bermuda 31 May 2024 8:12 PM (10 months ago)

Royal Naval Dockyard Bermuda

With its idyllic coastline and surrounding turquoise waters, Bermuda draws widespread attention for its vibrant brilliance. It has long been praised for its perfect blend of multicultural heritage and unending luxury in an environment of pink-sand beaches, lush flora, and offshore reefs offering the best diving in the world. Among its many iconic spots is the historic Royal Naval Dockyard in the West End.

This historic maritime port not only houses the National Museum of Bermuda but also boasts dozens of restaurants, shops, and attractions including Dolphin Quest. Read on to experience what makes the Royal Naval Dockyard Bermuda a dream holiday spot.

History of The Dockyard

The Royal Naval Dockyard in Bermuda was built in 1795 as a direct result of Britain’s loss of the American colonies. It served as a strategic naval base for the British Navy from the Revolutionary War in the United States through the Cold War. To further show their might, the British built the Keep Fort to help guard the Dockyard against attacks by land and sea. Therefore, the Royal Naval Dockyard Bermuda was crucial in maintaining a thriving naval and civilian community.

The Bermudian government purchased it in 1953, and it has since been a hot spot for all kinds of fun things to do. The buildings—many of them former ammunition storage and repair facilities— have been converted into exhibits, craft markets, shopping plazas, and entertainment joints. Therefore, expect nothing but a blend of history, culture, and natural beauty.

What to Do at the Royal Naval Dockyard

National Museum of Bermuda

The National Museum of Bermuda is a great starting point in the Keep Fort. The museum features exhibits and artifacts on Bermuda’s maritime history. It is also a champion for the preservation of Bermuda’s underwater and land-based cultural heritage. You will find everything from Bermuda’s military history to shipwrecks, gold bars, and other treasures.

You can start with the Commissioner’s House, which houses collections of antique maps, maritime paintings, and exhibits about the slave trade and emigration patterns. Don’t also forget to experience 500 years of Bermuda history in the Hall of History. Technically, there’s so much about Bermuda’s heritage that you’ll find at the National Museum of Bermuda.

Bermuda Fun Golf

Occupying a one-acre waterfront location, Bermuda Fun Golf is one of the best mini-golf courses in the world. This 18-hole mini course features fun and challenging holes that cater to golfers of all ages—both experienced and beginners. You’ll love the panoramic view, which includes nice greens, ocean views, and several nice hazards in the form of bunkers and water bodies. When done, you grab food and drinks at the Caddy Shack Bar & Grill as you enjoy the incredible views of Bermuda’s magnificent sunsets.

Snorkel Park Beach

You can also spend your day snorkeling and swimming in the lagoon at Snorkel Park Beach. This man-made alcove beach is located a few minutes away from Dockyard’s cruise ship port. It boasts crystal-clear waters and a vibrant tropical ambiance for an unforgettable beach escape. It also has a beachside bar and restaurant that not only offers full facilities but also creates a party feel elevated with music. You can rent the water sports equipment and enjoy Snorkel Park’s shallow waters, which feature colorful fish and reefs.

Clocktower Shopping Mall

With everything from boutiques to department stores, galleries, and restaurants, you can never get enough of the Clocktower Shopping Mall. This impressive building was a former British Royal Navy warehouse converted into one of Bermuda’s premier shopping destinations. Expect nothing but an electrifying experience that features high-end branded products and extensive dining options.

Plan Your Bermuda Visit

The Bermuda Royal Naval Dockyard is a picturesque way to break from the pink-sand beaches. Slow down and soak up centuries of history blended with fresh discoveries and premium experiences. Typically, Bermuda is home to numerous attractions that showcase the island’s unique culture, high-end stops, and natural beauty.

That’s why, at Bermuda.com, we help tourists and vacationers ensure that their laid-back vacation begins with Bermuda’s top highlights. Our complete Bermuda guides cover everything from historical reenactments to vibrant destinations and hidden gems to explore. Browse our website today to learn more.

Favourite Beaches 12 May 2024 4:00 AM (10 months ago)

On Any given day…

Find a Bermuda Beach and claim it as your own…

From East to West there are approximately 34 sandy beaches and coves in Bermuda. Here are a few of our favourites and if you look closely you will find tiny traces of pink sand on some and handfuls of pink sand on others. If you’re interested in learning more about which beaches have which grades of sand and the various characteristics within, The Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute, also known as the Ocean Discover Centre at BUEI has a fabulous interactive touch display.

Clearwater Beach

There is a choice of beautiful beaches to choose from on St. David’s Island in the east end: Clearwater Beach is next to a playground and has a seasonal beach house; Turtle Bay is a lovely cove which is great for snorkeling, and the nature reserve boasts stretches of soft sand at the end of every path.

Bus 6 from St. George’s

Tobacco Bay

Famous for its stunning limestone formations – natural sculptures that emerge from the glassy water, this picturesque, sheltered cove is also a snorkelers’ dream. The short walk from the old town of St. George is well worth it. There is a beach house for rentals, food and drink, in the summer months.

Takes about 20 minutes to reach Tobacco Bay beach from Kings Square, St. George’s

John Smith’s Bay

Off the beaten track in Smith’s parish, this popular locals’ beach is a little less crowded than the western south shore destinations, but still boasts soft sand and great swimming and snorkeling. The Harrington Hundreds grocery store is just a few minutes away by moped if you want to make your own picnic.

Bus route 1

Shelly Bay

A parent’s dream beach, Shelly Bay boasts warm, shallow water, a soft sandy bottom and backs on to a playground and sports field. A favourite for kids and novice swimmers – and close to the bus stop.

Bus route 10 or 11

Febryary in Bermuda

Warwick Long Bay

To truly grasp the beauty of Bermuda’s south shore, walk the length of Warwick Long Bay and clamber across the rocks, or take a detour over the sand dunes, to Jobson Cove and Chaplin Bay. On a quiet day in the spring and summer you will see more longtails than fellow tourists.

Bus route 7

Horseshoe Bay

A crescent of soft, pink sand, lapped by clear blue water, fringed by sand dunes and bordered with sandstone cliffs, garnished with swaying palms – Horseshoe, in Southampton Parish, is the mecca of the island’s beaches and a must for every Bermuda visitor. Rum Bum Beach House is open in the summer months.

Bus route 7

Church Bay

Swim with shoals of brightly coloured parrot fish among the pristine coral reef that pierce the water just yards from shore at this small south shore bay, widely revered as Bermuda’s best beach for snorkelers.

Bermuda Day 29 Apr 2024 3:55 AM (11 months ago)

Bermuda Day is a public holiday in the islands of Bermuda. This year it is celebrated on Friday May 24, 2024. Bermuda Day is widely considered the first unofficial day of summer and the culminating event of our annual Heritage Month.

Bermuda Day is traditionally the first day of the year that residents will go into the sea. It is also traditionally the first day on which Bermuda shorts are worn as business attire (although in recent years, Bermuda shorts are increasingly worn at any time of the year). Many people also see Bermuda Day as the first day on which they can go out on the water after the winter — consequently there is always a rush to get one’s boat ‘in de water’ before Bermuda Day.

To celebrate the holiday, there is a parade in Hamilton, Bermuda, and a road race from the west end of the island into Hamilton. For the first time, in 2015, the race started from St George’s and into Hamilton. These events are popular with spectators, and residents are known to stake out particular sections of the pavements to enable them to watch the runners and the floats. Ways of marking out one’s family’s section can include roping it off (frowned on as people have been hurt walking into them the night before), marking it off with tape with one’s name on it, or sleeping there overnight.

For info on the parade click here

Cup Match in Bermuda 29 Apr 2024 3:00 AM (11 months ago)

Bermuda Cup Match 2024

August 1st and 2nd, This year Cup Match is hosted by Somerset Cricket Club

During Cup Match, a public holiday unique to the island of Bermuda, the community enjoys a two day celebration of camping, boating, swimming and – most importantly – cricket. Every year before the start of the Cup Match holiday, rival fans can be seen donning their team’s colours – red and navy for Somerset, sky blue and navy for St. George’s – leaving no question as to which team they support.

The forerunner to Cup Match was introduced to mark Emancipation Day, which took place on August 1st, 1834. Bermudians from Somerset and St. George’s marked the anniversary of the abolition of slavery by holding annual picnics, with the highlight being a friendly cricket match played between lodges from the east and west ends of the island.

In 1901, during a cricket match between two major Friendly Societies, an agreement was made to play for an annual trophy. Members of the Friendly Societies and Lodges raised funds, and in 1902 a silver cup that was played for annually was introduced. Cup Match was officially born.

In 1947 two official national public holidays were introduced and are now held annually on the Thursday and Friday closest to August 1st. The first day of the Cup Match holiday was named Emancipation Day in 1999, and continues the tradition of remembering the end of slavery. The second holiday, Somers Day, commemorates Admiral Sir George Somers, whose ship, the Sea Venture, was on its way to the Virginia settlement when it wrecked in Bermuda in 1609. This shipwreck led to the island’s permanent settlement by the British in 1612.

The two-day holiday became the annual two days of cricket played between the St. George’s Cricket Club and Somerset Cricket Club for the cup – Cup Match.

The Original Bermuda Shorts 15 Apr 2024 4:00 AM (11 months ago)

This year marked the 240th Anniversary of the Bermuda Gunpowder Plot and Belcario Thomas, our resident Accounts manager and expert on all things Tobacco Bay (the site of the historic event), was invited to a reception at Government House. What does one wear when meeting a representative of Her Majesty the Queen? When he put this question to the office, the answer was unanimous – The English Sports Shop.

“Because where else does one go for the ultimate pair of traditional Bermuda shorts?” The newly converted Belcario is preaching to the choir. This iconic Hamilton Store opened in 1918, establishing itself as the go-to for formal and business-casual attire, usually involving the eponymous short and knee high socks. When he returned looking remarkably dapper, we couldn’t resist grilling him on the experience.

“I walked in ten minutes before closing,” he confessed. “They were super attentive, extremely helpful, I was spoiled for choice.

“They actually helped put my entire look together, which I appreciated. And after finding the perfect form-fitting jacket, they suggested changing the buttons out, which was a very nice touch. So they found the perfect jacket, then they found the perfect buttons and, of course, these traditional Bermuda shorts.”

Though it was obvious, we had to ask: Why pink?

“They thought I would look pretty in pink,” he added, ever the stoic.

And the unconventional royal blue socks?

“You can’t really rock the formal Bermuda uniform without the socks and I thought they were a bold choice to go with the light pink.” Because that’s the sort of unconventional guy he is.

“Of course they steamed the jacket,” he added. “They promised to have it ready by noon the next day and it was. It was nicely presented in a garment bag.”

Ed note: He did get a few whistles during this impromptu photo shoot

The Ducking Stool Reenactment Of A Historic Punishment 8 Apr 2024 5:24 AM (11 months ago)

The Town of St. George reenacts a historic punishment – the Ducking Stool.

This event takes place on Ordnance Island, during the tourist season (April to October). Every Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 1 pm, visitors and locals gather to witness a glimpse into Bermuda’s colonial past.

The reenactment involves a volunteer playing the role of a punished townsperson. Dressed in period clothing, they’re seated in a wooden chair attached to a long arm. With the assistance of nearby tourists and a dramatic push, the chair dips the participant into the St. George’s Harbour waters, simulating the original punishment.

The audience reaction is a gasp, with cheers and laughter ringing out after the dunking. This interactive element adds to the experience, allowing the public to engage with the town’s history. The reenactment serves as a reminder of Bermuda’s past while offering informative activity for visitors that is not found anywhere else in Bermuda that has the historic atmosphere.

Bespoke Luxury – Jewellery by Davidrose 3 Apr 2024 7:02 AM (12 months ago)

by Nadia Hall

“We’re gonna get you one of these,” David says, waking me from a gem-induced hypnosis.

Their minimal St.George’s boutique is a breath of fresh air in a world of overstocked accessory shops and it’s easy to find yourself quietly absorbed in the treasures on display.

The conscious, luxury jewellers, which is owned by Bermudian David Zuill and his wife Rose, offers its clientele a select sample of ready-to-wear luxury pieces as well as hand-crafted bridal and statement pieces. It’s not unusual to find them bent over the bridal display in the corner, hushed words exchanged over plans for future engagements.

“What do you like?” he probes. It’s a genuine question. The two may run a business together, but they are, at their core, romantics, confident that our interview will one day translate to the ring of my dreams.

The pair met and fell in love at university in Toronto and formed the company after they discovered a collective passion for jewellery and design. Rose, a third generation jeweler, aids clients in conceptualising their ideas and designing the piece, while David, who has a background in computer sciences, creates a 3-D rendition.

“It’s made to order,” Rose explains. “Based on David’s designs, we can create pieces that make our clients feel good and look good at the same time.”

David is a rare breed. He speaks with an air of certainty that has even the steadfast skeptic in me believing that one of their stunning gems is, as he puts it, my “birthright”.

All of Davidrose’s diamonds pass the Kimberley Process Certification, which prevents ‘conflict’ diamonds from entering the main stream.

They have built something truly unique, offering clients in Bermuda a new way to experience luxury jewellery. The company was conceived in 2009, and the couple have been designing one of a kind bridal, bespoke and fashion pieces for clients ever since. They’ve gained a loyal following of international clientele from Canada, US and Bermuda as well as the Middle East and India. Many of their clients are repeat customers. “People are getting married 12 months out of the year. If they’re not getting married they’re getting engaged,” Rose says matter-of-factly. I’m quickly learning that the world they live in is clearly more romantic than most.

Claiming The Bermudian Magazine’s Best of Bermuda awards for three years running, this year they took home two awards including one for Fine Jewellery.  Stop by Water Street to view their newest collection, “Bermuda Pride,” a collection of Bermuda inspired motifs and their popular first, Ocean Collection, which was inspired by the turquoise waters that surround historic St. George’s, the shop’s gorgeous location.

The First Plane To Fly Over Bermuda – May 22, 1919 3 Apr 2024 4:00 AM (12 months ago)

Featured above: The Governor, General Sir James Willcocks is helped on board the Curtis Jenny seaplane in Hamilton Harbour.

On May 22, 1919 – The First Plane Flew Over Bermuda

It was a Burgess-Curtiss N-9H Jenny, with registration number A-2646, powered by a Wright-Hispano 150 horsepower engine. It was a naval scout hydro-airplane that normally traveled on the deck of her mother ship the USS Elinore. The aircraft had a gross weight of 2765 pounds and a top speed of 80 miles per hour. The 8725 ton cargo vessel was launched in 1917 as the General de Castelnau and was transferred from the US Shipping Board to the US Navy for war service. After the war, she had dumped gas drums and mustard gas shells in deep waters off Virginia.

On that date in 1919, she was in the town of St. George in Bermuda after a scientific research voyage south of Bermuda, sheltering from bad weather. She was flown over the City of Hamilton Harbor by United States Navy Ensigns G. L. Richard and W. H. Cushing, The sole passenger on the airplane was Governor General Sir James Willcocks. He dropped from the open cockpit the first “Air Letter” posted in Bermuda. A total of 560 N-9s were built during World War I, most of which were “H” models. Only 100 were actually built by Curtiss. Most were built under license by the Burgess Company of Marblehead, Massachusetts. Fifty others were assembled after the war, from spare components and engines by the U.S. Navy at Naval Air Station Pensacola in Florida.

The Governor wrote a ‘Message of Goodwill to the people of Bermuda’ and dropped it in the Great Sound while flying to Dockyard. The ‘Message’ was found by 10-year-old Dudley Butterfield while swimming two days later.

Alexandra Mosher Studio Jewellery 3 Apr 2024 4:00 AM (12 months ago)

Alexandra Mosher Studio Jewellery

Alexandra’s whimsical Flagship Store & Studio is a picturesque sanctuary filled with tiny, fascinating pieces of handcrafted jewellery.

She and her team are dedicated to helping guests find a little bit of magic and inspiration to remember their amazing stay in Bermuda.

Located on the chic west end of Front Street in Hamilton, the shelves at Alexandra’s Flagship Store are bursting with original jewellery unlike anything  you’ve seen before.

From Sterling silver pendants and charms set with pink sand to gold shell-textured diamond engagement rings and countless delicate designs in between, Alexandra and her team handcraft jewellery that reflects the natural elements found in the island’s clear blue waters and lush tropical gardens.

Alexandra is known for her innovation, passion and lighthearted design whimsy.  In fact, her collections have won numerous awards. Alexandra most recently won the Bermudian Magazine’s “Best Local Jewellery Designer” award and the “Best Commercial Interior Design” award for her new Flagship Store & Studio.

Alexandra leads an energetic team of Bermudian women alongside her husband Darren, who specializes in spreadsheets and systems. They have been married for four years and you can feel the love they have for each other infused in the company culture.  “We are all very friendly and industrious – we make beautiful things happen around here!” she says.

The sun-drenched Flagship features Alexandra’s best-loved designs as well as some one-of-a-kind collectors’ pieces that are only available until someone snaps them up.

“I’m always working on something different, often with unique stones or experimental design elements,” she explains.

“Much of my childhood was spent foraging for materials to make things, and at an early age, I inherited a deep love of natural elements and also of making things with my hands.  My mother is an art teacher, my father is a psychologist who runs his own business, and my grandmother was an incredible woman who broke the mould as a single mother working as a buyer for fashion department stores back in the 50’s and 60’s.  I suppose I learned a lot about design, originality and tenacity from them,” she tells us.

When you visit, don’t hesitate to ask for a glimpse inside the Studio to see Alexandra and her team handcrafting each piece.  In this day and age – with so much jewellery on the market that is mass produced – it’s a rare opportunity to see behind the scenes into a bustling workshop.

What started fifteen years ago as one-woman-show has blossomed into a thriving design studio, specializing in providing travelers and Bermudians alike with tiny beautiful gifts that make the heart flutter.

“Bermuda is at the core of my design ethos, and I am so fortunate to have the opportunity to spend my days working with a phenomenal team that share my vision of bringing more beauty into the world.  I hope you will come and find a piece that speaks to your heart, and your Bermuda story.”
