Congratulations to the COPA 2024 Medalists. 17 Feb 4:13 AM (last month)

  The winners of the 2024 Canadian Online Publishing awards were announced on February 12 in Toronto with a live zoom-cast to other finalists from across the country. The big winner was University Affairs that got 5 medals (2G, 3S) in the B2B division. Urbania was the big winner in the Consumer category with 3 medals (2G, S) and the Investigative Journalism Foundation of Canada the lead the pack with 2 golds in the Media division. Entries from the schools saw Red River College get 4 medals (2G, 2S). Inuvik Drum Newspaper Closes 14 Feb 4:13 AM (last month)

    Invik Drum newspaper's last issue The Inuvik Drum’s last print edition was January 9, 2025, 59 years to the day after it was first published. The Drum, was published weekly, served the town of 3,000 people and the wider Beaufort Delta region, home to just under 7,000 residents. It was first published in 1966 and was acquired by NNSL in 1988. The Company gave no reason for the closure was given. Canada Post Changing Systems On July 2nd 14 Feb 4:13 AM (last month)

Canada Post lost a lot of parcel business in the last two postal strikes and is trying to get it back.  Canada Post will migrate from their current SAP platform to the next generation cloud-based SAP solution. This upgrade will immediately improve how customers ship, mail and access parcel pricing. It will also provide improved billing and invoicing. Canada Post intended stated a target go-live date of September 3, 2024. Canada Post had re-aligned the target date to July 2, 2025. These changes may impact some customers accounting processes. Parcel rates, price changes for Parcel Services will come into effect with the 2025 implementation timing of the new SAP platform. rate codes for Parcel Services will expand from 45 to 128, while maintaining the current number of weight steps.

            Michael Atkins Michale Atkins was an industry mover and shaker in the Canadian publishing scene since the 1980’s and was instrumental in the development of northern Ontario media markets that started with Northern Life, Sudbury.com and Northern Ontario Business He was able to create this into a media empire: Laurentian Media Group that was a diversified media company that included IT World Canada Inc., a print and digital trade group; CCMC Sports Group, an integrated sports marketing and publishing company; ConceptShare Inc., a web-based design collaboration business; Xpeerient Inc., an ICT outsourcing platform; and Adventus International Limited, a digital music business.

  Survey of the severity that tariffs imposed by the United States will have on Canadian magazines, Magazines Canada understands the potential severity that tariffs imposed by the United States will have on our economy, including the impacts it could have on your magazine. Working with the Department of Canadian Heritage and the Canada Council for the Arts, Magazines Canada would like to better understand the estimated or potential impacts these tariffs may have if they come into place in March. Magazines Canada would also like to know if there are any intra-provincial or national efforts that could reduce operating difficulties/red tape in Canada. Please fill out the survey below by Friday, February 14 at 5pm ET. Your responses are extremely important in helping to inform the government, funders and Magazines Canada's actions should the tariffs come into place.

 Rush Kazi, Comedian The 2024 COPA Awards will feature a guest entertainer Rush Kazi, a stand-up comedian based in Toronto. Rush’s comedy style can be described as confessional, raw, and acerbic story-telling. Drawing on life experiences as unique as jail time and as mundane as getting a wax, Rush’s refreshing and hilarious delivery and unique point of view has not found its equal in her contemporaries. Rush’s debut comedy album, About Time, was declared one of the Top 10 Canadian Comedy Albums of 2022 by Glenn Sumi (Now Magazine, So Sumi).  Video Clip    The COPA will be held on February 12, 2025 at Dim Sum King  in Toronto. Hosted by RNAO, the annual Media Awards honours journalists for their outstanding reporting on nursing and health-care issues. Stories published or broadcast in Ontario during 2024 are eligible. Entries are scored by an independent panel of judges consisting of nurses and journalists.The competition is limited to one entry per person. Entrants may not submit a single entry to multiple categories.

survey was conducted from Sept/ Oct, 2024, sample of 2,013 U.S. and Canadian adults ages 18-64 who are employed full time.  Ricoh’s 2024 North American Workplace Fulfillment Gap Index delves into these pressing challenges and insights. Key findings include:  1) Fulfillment is in decline: 51% of employees feel less fulfilled at work compared to five years ago, with remote workers reporting significantly higher levels of fulfillment than those fully on-site.  2) A retention lever: 84% of employees said their level of fulfillment is an important deciding factor in whether to stay at a company.

Brand was built from its magazine Playboy magazine with an annual edition to be released in February 2025. Playboy founded in December 1953, shuttered its print operations in 2020, after facing recent struggles with founder Hugh Hefner’s death in 2017 and the floundering of the print business at large. Mark Healy has been appointed as the Editor-in-Chief for Playboy magazine's first print edition since 2020. Healy is a well-known content leader, journalist and editor who brings a wealth of experience in the media industry and held senior positions at the GQ, Rolling Stone, and Men’s Journal, where he was Editor-in-Chief.

The merged company will operate under the Getty Images name.  Getty Images and Shutterstock announced that they entered into a merger agreement to combine in a merger, creating a premier visual content company. The combined company, which would have an enterprise value of approximately $3.7 billioni, will be named Getty Images Holdings, Inc. As a combined company, Getty Images and Shutterstock will offer a content library with greater depth and breadth for the benefit of customers, expanded opportunities for its contributor community and a reinforced commitment to the adoption of inclusive and representative content.

  with more than 130 brands across multiple print, online, and mobile platforms. Revenue for the quarter was $110.3 million as compared to $104.6 million in the same period in the prior year, representing an increase of $5.7 million (5.4%). The revenue increase was primarily due to increases in advertising revenue of $5.6 million (11.1%), circulation revenue of $3.3 million (10.3%) and parcel revenue of $0.4 million (2.8%), partially offset by decreases in other revenue of $3.6 million (43.8%). Excluding the impact of the Saltwire asset acquisition, advertising revenue for the quarter increased by 1.4%. As such, excluding the impact of any acquisition related activity, advertising revenue has increased in comparison to the same quarter in the prior year for the first time since the third quarter in 2022.

Google confirmed it has transferred the money to the Canadian Journalism Collective, a federally incorporated non-profit organization run by independent publishers and broadcasters.
