WPGM Recommends: The Tempted – Passions & Misdemeanours (Album Review) 13 Apr 11:53 AM (yesterday, 11:53 am)

The Tempted are back. After decades of musical experimentation, solo ventures, and a rekindled partnership, Brian Callaghan and Michael McDonagh return with, Passions & Misdemeanours, a lean and captivating 13-track album that brings their distinct sound into a new era.

This is a record that cuts through the air like the soundtrack to a late-night film, all moody atmospheres and hypnotic synth-pop tinges, with an undercurrent of alternative rock grit and blues. In a world where nostalgia reigns, The Tempted have crafted something that feels both timeless and immediately relevant, proving why they remain one of the most potent forces in modern music.

Formed in 1990, The Tempted’s origins in Scotland’s alternative rock scene set the stage for a unique, genre-blurring musical identity. Their early demos caught the ear of major labels like Island Records, though a significant record deal never materialized.

Despite this, Brian and Michael’s passion for music never wavered. Brian continued to write prolifically, experimenting with a fusion of analogue and early digital recording techniques, while Michael stayed engaged with the industry. Though their paths diverged over time, their connection to The Tempted remained undying.

In 2021, after a few solo albums apiece, the duo reconnected, reigniting the creative spark that had defined their earlier work. This reunion has culminated in, Passions & Misdemeanours, an album that builds on everything The Tempted have explored throughout the years.

It’s a record born out of experience, blending genres like alternative rock, blues, and synth-pop in a way that feels entirely fresh yet deeply familiar. The duo’s raw energy is tempered by a polished, almost cinematic production, resulting in an album that feels like it could be the score to some forgotten midnight classic.

From the first track to the last, Passions & Misdemeanours, is a study in contradictions—gritty yet pristine, introspective but expansive. The album’s texture is the product of an ambitious and globally-reaching recording process.

Mixing duties were handled by Gunnar Smari Helgason in Iceland, while Ross Owen Campbell lent his expertise from the United States, not only mixing the record but also mastering it in New York. The result is an album that feels cosmopolitan in scope but intensely personal in execution.

One of the album’s most exciting features is its collection of guest collaborators. Mick MacNeil, the legendary keyboardist of Simple Minds, adds his distinctive touch, his synths weaving seamlessly into the fabric of the album’s sound. His contribution adds a layer of nostalgia, drawing on the 80s influences that have long shaped The Tempted’s sonic palette.

Meanwhile, Mary Kiani, a disco artist of some renown, makes a few select vocal appearances, lending a burst of energy and dynamism to the mix. The presence of bassist Shug Brankin is also noteworthy – his basslines drive the rhythm and groove of several tracks, providing a backbone that is at once infectious and unyielding.

A few standout tracks demonstrate exactly what makes, Passions & Misdemeanours, so compelling. “A Lonely Life” begins with a mournful, bluesy guitar riff before morphing into a sweeping anthem with shimmering synths and a soaring vocal melody. The song is a perfect example of the duo’s ability to build drama and emotion within a single track, creating a journey for the listener in just a few minutes.

“Love Love Love,” with its infectious beat and catchy chorus, encapsulates the more modern pop sensibilities that The Tempted now embrace, while still holding on to the foundational grit of their past. “Sailing Home” is the album’s emotional centrepiece, a song that balances vulnerability with hope, offering a sense of closure and resolution.

While, Passions & Misdemeanours, is undeniably a reflection of The Tempted’s past, it also represents a bold and exciting new chapter. There’s a renewed sense of purpose here – this is an album from a band that is fully in control of their sound and vision.

The chemistry between Brian and Michael has never been more potent, and their ability to blend influences from their extensive careers into something cohesive and fresh speaks to the strength of their partnership.

Their storytelling is more sophisticated than ever, with soaring melodies, intricate arrangements, and a palpable emotional depth. Each track feels like it’s telling a story, and the album as a whole invites listeners into an immersive sonic experience that never quite lets go.

The duo’s musical evolution is undeniable. After years of pursuing solo projects, Passions & Misdemeanours, represents the culmination of their individual journeys – a reflection of how far they’ve come while holding true to their roots. The album offers an honest window into their creative process, showcasing a sound that blends the past with the future in a way that feels organic rather than contrived.

For fans of The Tempted’s earlier work, this album will feel like a reunion with old friends. For new listeners, it’s a perfect introduction to a band that has always been on the periphery of mainstream recognition but has never been short of greatness.

Passions & Misdemeanours, is an album of depth, passion, and ambition, marking a new, exhilarating phase in the duo’s enduring career. It’s a reminder of why The Tempted remains one of the most influential and forward-thinking acts in modern music – a duo whose passion for their craft only grows stronger with time.

WPGM Commentary: Kaia Laurielle Finds Community And Belonging On ‘Without Hearts’ EP 30 Mar 7:22 AM (15 days ago)

Without Hearts, There Is No Home is my latest conceptual EP. It follows the themes of home, love, belonging and takes an even wider lens on grief, memory and what love can feel like, unraveling the joys and challenges that come with it.

The EP was put together over a period of years and throughout that time I was thinking about my community, the love that I feel and have for myself and others and how that informs me to navigate in today’s world. I was reading and looking at different excerpts of writing.

From Black writers such as Zora Neale Hurston, Bell Hooks, Alice Walker and Octavia E Butler and their perceptions and stories that exchanged words on love and community. I wanted to create a project that combined my reflections and my personal experiences too.

When I began writing this project, I felt quite isolated and alone. I have lots of people around me but I think I was at a desperate place searching for home not realising that home was within me. And really it’s the different hearts that make a home and those hearts include your own, my loved ones, my neighbours, people that are passing by. It took me a while to figure that out. I wanted that to be the overriding message and something that I work towards.

The project is a message for people who may feel alone and that home and love really resides within you wherever you are.The creative process really began with me and accompanied by keys. I challenged myself with new chord placements and inversions to evoke the right sentiment.

I then worked closely with three producers, one in particular called Miles who co-produced four tracks on the EP. The sessions were really intimate and focused on the fragility of my vocals and how to convey and capture that in the audio. We really took our time to get this across to the listeners and that raw open vulnerability you get when you are going through confused and sad emotions.

However, not all the songs are sad! “KEEP (Take)” and “The River” are songs where I feel I’ve come to a space of self-acceptance and I’m on a path and journey of change and being present in the moment. Those are the last two songs of the EP and I wanted to keep them to the end because that was what I was feeling at the end of the process.

I wrote and produced “The River” by myself because that was the last song I made in 2024 and it to me felt like the cherry on top and the ultimate sonic of where life was at for me at the time. I didn’t want to incorporate any other Producers or any other thoughts in this track because it was really about being present and flowing with the moment- just like the river. If I then added extra influence, I feel it would then take away from the piece and the lyricism.

The project has different songs with different influences so some are a bit more R&B or some are a bit more soulful then some have more of an electronic style. However, the overarching sound is my voice and the project is reflective of the sounds that I enjoy and love and what I was listening to during the making of the EP.

This is my third EP. I feel quite emotional about the overall journey because so much has happened within that time but for me it also feels a rebirth and an awakening. I hope that people can listen and feel awakened and feel that this can be a soundtrack to their day-to-day life and how to move when feeling alone and searching for home and love. Igniting tingles inside of you.

WPGM Recommends: Lola Moxom – OXO (EP Review) 30 Mar 6:48 AM (15 days ago)

Some people haunt themselves, holding tight to what has already let them go. That’s not Lola Moxom and that’s definitely not her new EP OXO. This is a set that keeps it moving, balancing between what was and what won’t be again.

It’s R&B with its edges sharpened—drums snapping clean, bassline low enough to pull the walls in close, and melodies threading through the thick air with ease. She doesn’t force the feeling. She lets it all walk toward her, steady and certain.

The first hit lands with “Too Late”, a slow burn pressed against warm keys and a bassline that barely lifts its head as it stalks. She sings about an ex who moved on a little too fast, his apology arriving as an afterthought.

But it’s not sorrow that we hear—it’s clarity. The moment when emotions settle, and the past looks so much smaller in the rearview. The delivery is resigned, folded into the groove with a “I’ve moved on, boo…you probably should too” energy.

Then there’s “GOOD4U” sultry and slinking – all bite, no hesitation. The harp-like synths and tight hi-hats pull the song forward as Lola leans into the mess of desire, power, and control. It’s sexy, self-aware, and unbothered—100% pure main-character energy.

That said, “Turn Down the Lights” is where she fully settles into a soul-dipped pocket. Slow, smoky, and bluesy, this is the song. The bass pulses deep, the electric guitar wails in the background, and Moxom’s voice is all honey and hurt. There’s weight in each and every breath. It’s a plea, but not a desperate one—more like the last attempt to bridge the distance before letting go.

She strips it down even further with “7:21”, a slow and almost rustic bit of brilliance built on space and restraint. The guitars are moody and her rhythm section channels a solid dose of southern soul. And while it the kind of track that plays at 2 a.m. when the room is too quiet, and the past feels loud – it still doesn’t feel like in-a-blue-funk heartbreak.

We find Lola stepping much lighter on “Cool With It”, a throwback to the R&B radio hits of the early 2000s—snappy drums, bright keys, a little shoulder-roll bounce, and a touch of Destiny’s Child-styled bravado. By the time “Superpower” arrives, the album feels like it’s exhaling.

A piano-driven ballad that strips everything back to the essentials; a grand piano, Moxom’s sweet soprano voice, and nothing else. It’s a slow-rising appeal to move from friendship to something deeper that really taps into the tension of those types of moments. It’s raw, vulnerable, and a near-perfect turning point for starting the EP back at one.

Every inch of OXO feels stitched together by Lola Moxom’s voice—soft when it needs to be, cutting when it has to be. She flips through heartbreak, heat, and a little playful side-eye, building it all on a depth that simmers under the surface. If this is the direction she’s heading, then wherever she takes her sound next is going to be impossible to ignore.

WPGM Recommends: Bonnie Medicine – Belonging (EP Review) 30 Mar 5:58 AM (15 days ago)

Hailing from the scenic and mystical landscapes of Scotland, Bonnie Medicine’s latest EP, Belonging, arrives as a timely beacon of hope, connection, and healing.

In a world increasingly divided and fragmented, Belonging, offers a musical sanctuary – a place to reconnect with both the earth and each other. This five-track release is a testament to Bonnie’s unique ability to weave Celtic folk traditions with soulful lyricism, creating an experience that feels as intimate as it is universally uplifting.

From the very first note, Bonnie’s voice wraps itself around the listener like a comforting embrace, inviting them into a world of spiritual depth and grounding melodies. Belonging, is a pilgrimage – a journey through grief, joy, strength, and the shared human desire for peace and unity. Bonnie delivers this pilgrimage with a voice that resonates deeply within the soul, each word and note carefully chosen to stir both reflection and action.

The EP opens with the anthemic “We Belong,” which is as much a rallying cry as it is a heartfelt anthem. Bonnie’s soaring vocals lead the charge, her lyrics “We belong, we belong, together as one” offering a powerful reminder of the innate human need for connection.

The track’s infectious melody and uplifting message resonate deeply, especially in times of uncertainty, as Bonnie sings of belonging not just to each other, but to the Earth itself. The repetition of the chorus makes it an anthem, and its positive, healing energy shines through, providing an immediate sense of solace for the listener.

“Holy Trees” continues the EP’s exploration of connection—this time with the natural world. A tender love song to the towering trees that stand as silent witnesses to the passage of time, the track takes on an almost reverent quality. The sound of rustling percussion and delicate guitar strokes blend with Bonnie’s angelic vocals, as she reflects on the wisdom of nature: “Into the old ways, the ancient days / Where we could feel the mountain’s prayers.”

There is an ethereal quality to her voice, particularly when she sings, “Holy trees, giving me everything I need,” a line that perfectly encapsulates the song’s reverence for nature as both a source of wisdom and a place of solace. The inclusion of old Celtic folklore adds depth to the song, creating a palpable sense of grounding and spiritual connection.

Moving deeper into the EP, “Heartbroken” and “Warriors” explore the emotional complexity of human existence. “Heartbroken” introduces a more sombre tone, but it also carries a message of resilience.

Bonnie’s vulnerability in this track is striking, as she sings about the weight of loss and the necessity of embracing both our wounds and our healing. The song’s sparse instrumentation and haunting arrangement create an atmosphere of raw emotion, further amplifying the sincerity in Bonnie’s voice.

In contrast, “Warriors” is a stirring anthem of empowerment, filled with energy and purpose. The track picks up momentum with the addition of piano and strings, creating a sweeping sense of motion that matches Bonnie’s message of collective strength.

We are warriors / Bringing love to all life,” she sings with passion and determination. This is a call to action—a reminder that we have the power to choose love over fear, to fight for justice, and to stand firm in the face of adversity. The delicate interplay between the strings, percussion, and guitar provides a lush sonic backdrop for Bonnie’s commanding vocals, creating a track that feels both inspiring and deeply moving.

Belonging, culminates in the poetic, reflective track “Wild Bodies,” a fitting conclusion to the journey. With a more spoken-word style, Bonnie offers a tribute to femininity, earthiness, and the divine.

The track’s lyrical beauty and sensuality are enhanced by a subtle arrangement of guitar and voice, which slowly builds to a stunning crescendo before tapering off into silence. The bittersweet ending of, Belonging, lingers long after the final note has faded, leaving the listener in a state of peaceful contemplation.

What sets, Belonging, apart is not just its melodic beauty, but its profound sense of purpose. Bonnie Medicine has crafted an EP that is both deeply personal and politically charged. Each track is a call to action, urging listeners to remember their roots, reconnect with the Earth, and stand in solidarity with one another.

Her commitment to social justice, collective healing, and environmental stewardship is evident in every note, making this collection of tracks not only a work of art but also a powerful tool for awakening and transformation.

Bonnie’s voice is an instrument of healing. Through her evocative lyrics and haunting melodies, she has created an EP that nourishes both the soul and the mind. Belonging, serves as a reminder that music is not just a form of entertainment, but a form of activism—one that has the power to heal, inspire, and unite us all.

Whether you are seeking solace, empowerment, or simply a deeper connection to the world around you, Bonnie Medicine’s Belonging will guide you on that journey.

In a world that so often feels divided, Belonging, offers a refuge – a space where love, unity, and healing can thrive. With lush instrumentation, evocative lyricism, and a voice that speaks to the heart, the EP is a movement. And for those who seek music that transcends the ordinary and speaks directly to the soul, Belonging, is an absolute must-listen.

WPGM Previews: Wireless Festival 2025 23 Mar 10:48 AM (22 days ago)

Wireless Festival is pulling out all the stops for its 20th-anniversary edition, with none other than Drake making history as the first artist to headline the festival for three consecutive nights—each featuring a unique setlist. This will mark Drake’s first UK performance in six years, making the announcement even more monumental for fans. The festival will take place from July 11 to July 13 at London’s Finsbury Park.

Drake first headlined Wireless in 2012, with the festival declaring him “the audience’s most requested artist.” His return to Wireless solidifies his position as one of the most influential figures in rap and hip-hop.

The Canadian superstar’s comeback follows his surprise 2018 appearance when he stepped in for DJ Khaled at the last minute. This time, however, he is set to take full command of the stage across three nights, delivering an experience unlike any other in the festival’s history.

Adding to the excitement, PARTYNEXTDOOR, another Canadian powerhouse, will take the stage on Friday. Earlier last month, Drake and PARTYNEXTDOOR released Some Sexy Songs 4 U, a collaborative album that further amplifies the anticipation for their sets.

Alongside PARTYNEXTDOOR, R&B star Summer Walker will take the stage on the same day. Walker made waves with her previous performance at Wireless back in 2022. This year’s appearance marks her only European performance of 2025, making it an unmissable event for her fans.

Sunday promises to be just as electrifying, with Afrobeats icon Burna Boy making his Wireless debut. Known for his global hits and Grammy-winning sound, Burna Boy’s presence will add a fresh dynamic to the festival.

The day will also feature dancehall legend Vybz Kartel, making his UK performance debut. This marks also one of his first European shows in over a decade, heightening anticipation among fans eager to witness a rare live performance from the Jamaican superstar.

A special segment called “Drake & the Mandem” is set for Saturday’s performance, this fueled speculation about potential surprise guests. Soon enough it was revealed that this meant Boy Better Know, the pioneering British grime collective.

BBK, founded by Skepta and Jme, made history as the first British grime act to headline Wireless, a defining moment for both the group and the festival. Now, in a full-circle moment, they return for their first live appearance in years. This performance will be particularly special as it celebrates not only 20 years of Wireless but also 20 years of BBK’s groundbreaking career. Fans can expect an unmissable tribute to the UK grime scene.

Wireless Festival 2025 is already shaping up to be one for the history books. With last year’s edition featuring the likes of Nicki Minaj, 21 Savage, J Hus, and Doja Cat, this year’s lineup is expected to be equally iconic. The festival has promised additional acts will be announced in the coming months, further increasing the excitement surrounding the event.

Unsurprisingly, demand for tickets was sky-high. General sale tickets sold out within minutes, making this the fastest-selling edition in Wireless history. Approximately 50,000 rap, R&B, and hip-hop fans are expected to attend the event each day, transforming Finsbury Park into the epicenter of urban music for an entire weekend. Those who missed out on tickets are now turning to resale options, hoping for a last-minute chance to be part of this historic celebration.

With the promise of unparalleled performances, surprise guests, and a lineup that bridges the past, present, and future of hip-hop, R&B, and grime, Wireless Festival 2025 is set to be one of the most memorable editions yet. Whether you’ve secured a ticket or are still searching for one, one thing is for sure – Finsbury Park is the place to be this summer.

WPGM Reviews: Kawala Live At O2 Institute Birmingham 23 Mar 6:22 AM (22 days ago)

As Kawala bid farewell to their fans, for the last time, the band head out on a UK tour with a stop at Birmingham’s O2 Institute for an unforgettable night. It was a bittersweet night saying goodbye but also a night of nostalgia and celebration.

Before Kawala took the stage, their tour support, Australian indie pop band, Teenage Dads, set the tone for the night. Bursting with infectious energy, they delivered a set full of catchy songs, captivating harmonies, and brought an overall fun vibe to the people of Birmingham. The crowd responded with enthusiasm, warming up for what was to come.

As the lights dimmed, cheers erupted around the room with a loud round of applause as Kawala made their way to the stage. As they all looked amongst the sea of people staring back at them, the smiles on their faces said it all. Taking in the moment that this will be their last time as a band in Birmingham, they were prepared to make this a night to remember.

Kicking things off with “”Never Really Here For Long”, the crowd sang back every word with the band. It was a strong start to the night. Vocalists Jim Higson and Dan McCarthy’s harmonies were in sync and polished, pulling the crowd in with their dreamy tones.

Kawala’s unique blend of genres was on full display, with tracks like “Jesse C’mon”, “Searching”, and “Heavy in the Morning”. The intricate musicianship of each member added layers of depth to their live performance. The set was a trip down memory lane, balancing newer material, along with fan favourites.

Midway through the set, the band took a moment to address the crowd, thanking them for their support over the years and sharing their appreciation for their fans. It was clear this farewell wasn’t just difficult for the fans but an emotional goodbye for the band, too.

As the night neared the end, Kawala delivered electrifying performances of Funky, American Adrenaline and Runaway to bring it all to an end. As the band said their goodbyes, the crowd chanted for one more song. When Kawala returned for the encore, the energy in the room was electric.

They kicked it off again with “Ticket to Ride”, a track that felt fitting for the occasion. The opening chord sent waves of excitement through the audience, and as soon as the chorus hit, everyone was singing at the top of their lungs. Throughout their set, there was a sense of joy and finality.

Then the final track to bring the night to an end was, “Do It Like You Do”, a song that has always been a fan favorite, but on this night, it felt even more special. The rhythm was infectious, the harmonies effortless, and by the final chorus, it was impossible to tell where the band ended and the crowd began.

This wasn’t just a goodbye; it was a celebration of everything KAWALA had built over the years. One last moment, one last song, and then, with a wave and a bow, it was time to say goodbye.

WPGM Previews: Cross The Tracks 2025 16 Mar 2:28 PM (29 days ago)

Get ready for a day of immersive musical magic as Brockwell Park transforms into the epicenter of London’s vibrant soundscape on May 25, 2025 for Cross The Tracks.

Cross The Tracks 2025 is set to deliver a heady mix of legendary grooves, cutting‐edge innovation, and soulful storytelling, all while celebrating the rich tapestry of jazz, funk, and soul. With a star-studded lineup featuring both celebrated icons and rising talents, this festival is more than just a festival – it’s an experience that encapsulates the heartbeat of modern and classic soul.

Leading the charge is Michael Kiwanuka, the Mercury Prize-winning soul luminary whose transcendent voice and evocative songwriting have redefined modern British soul. In 2024, Michel released his first album in 5 long years, Small Changes, but this body of work was well worth the wait.

Over the past year he has also been captivating audiences with intimate shows that were hailed as “a soulful homecoming” by critics, further cementing his reputation as an artist who bridges the gap between vintage soul and contemporary reflection.

Joining him as a co-headliner is the dynamic Ezra Collective. Fresh off the release of their acclaimed 2024 album Dance, No One’s Watching – an ode to the liberating power of dance and rhythm – Ezra Collective have taken the jazz world by storm.

Their record, recorded partly in Lagos and infused with afrobeat energy, has already earned four nominations at the BRIT Awards and has been celebrated for its infectious beats and genre-defying vision. Their live performance promises an electrifying set that fuses live instrumentation with improvisational flair, ensuring every moment is a vibrant celebration of movement and sound.

Jordan Rakei is set to mesmerize with his signature blend of smooth vocals and innovative production. Last year, his most vulnerable and latest album The Loop was met with critical acclaim, as did his incredible x day performance at the Royal Albert Hall last September. His performance is anticipated to be a deep dive into the emotional layers of modern R&B and jazz, resonating with anyone who’s ever found solace in music.

Best known as Anderson .Paak’s live band, the Free Nationals are master entertainers and musicians in their own right . Their signature sound – a seamless blend of R&B, funk, and soul—is the perfect complement to the festival’s vibe, offering an undercurrent of laid-back cool that will keep the energy flowing between headline acts.

Representing a storied legacy in funk, Cymande will take the stage with their timeless grooves. Having inspired countless musicians since the 1970s, they continue to enchant new audiences with their hypnotic, soulful rhythms. Renascence, their latest album after a 10 year hiatus has reignited interest in their groundbreaking work, proving that great music never fades—it only deepens with time.

Nala Sinephro pushes the boundaries of contemporary jazz with her experimental soundscapes. After the release of her latest album Endlessness, she’s now regarded as one of the most exciting voices redefining modern jazz. Expect her set to be a journey through unexpected sonic territories that challenge and delight in equal measure.

The soulful stylings of Sinéad Harnett are not to be missed. Her striking album Boundaries is a true lesson in self-love, wrapped around raw emotional honesty and refined vocal delivery. Her performance promises to capture that same heartfelt intimacy, blending contemporary R&B with the timeless elegance of soul.

Bashy adds an urban edge to the lineup with his dynamic lyricism and electrifying stage presence. After a 15 year hiatus, his latest album Being Poor is Expensive as earned him the title of Album Of The Year at the Mobo Awards. His witty wordplay and energetic delivery and thought provoking lyrics will inject a burst of contemporary vibrancy into the festival’s eclectic mix.

No lineup would be complete without the influential Gilles Peterson, whose decades-long career as a DJ and curator has been instrumental in shaping the sound of modern soul and jazz. Recently, his curated radio specials highlighting emerging Afrobeat and neo-soul talents have become must-listen sessions for music aficionados, promising a set filled with both nostalgia and discovery.

Skinshape offers an introspective mix of electronic textures and soulful beats, crafting a set that is both immersive and thought-provoking. His modern take on electronic-soul is a nod to London’s ever-evolving musical landscape.

Grammy winning & legendary artist, Bilal, is one of neo-soul’s most revered voices. His live performance is expected to be a masterclass in vocal improvisation and emotional depth, highlighting his unique ability to blur the lines between traditional soul and experimental sound.

The legacy of afrobeat lives on with Seun Kuti & Egypt 80. Their latest album, Heavier Yet (Lays the Crownless Head), produced by Lenny Kravitz and praised for its seamless blend of traditional afrobeat with glossy modern influences, has received rave reviews, including from The Guardian, which noted its powerful political messages and innovative sonic layering.

Seun Kuti’s performance will be a celebration of heritage and forward-thinking artistry, continuing the legacy of his father, Fela Kuti.

Rounding out this stellar lineup is the rising star Naomi Sharon. With a fresh, captivating energy and a voice that resonates with both power and vulnerability, Naomi Sharon represents the future of soul—bridging the gap between tradition and innovation.

WPGM Commentary: Marli Is Trying To Find Her Balance On ‘Baby Girl’ 16 Mar 2:44 AM (last month)

Hi, I’m Marli – an R&B singer and songwriter based in Cologne, Germany. Today I released my new single “baby girl“, a song I wrote for myself. And for you.

Writing “baby girl” was a deeply personal journey for me. This song was born out of a time when I, along with many people around me, was struggling with my mental health and trying to somehow find my balance in this roller coaster we call life.

I’m a person to quickly be hard on myself, when I’m “not strong enough” even though I show a lot of compassion to other people and their problems. Often we forget to extend the same love and kindness to ourselves that we so easily give to others. And “baby girl” is a reminder – to myself and to everyone who listens – that we are enough just as we are.

Creating “baby girl” was not just about the music – it was about crafting an experience that resonates on a deeper level. From the lyrics to the visuals, I wanted to build something that feels intimate, honest, and healing. A song that is uplifting and empowering to those who hear it. Like most of my songs, I wrote “baby girl” at home, in my bedroom at night. Just me and my piano, somehow forming a symbiosis that resulted in “baby girl”.

The original version I wrote was more mellow and pure. Like most of the time, when I go to the studio, I wasn’t quite sure how the song would turn out. The production can add so many elements to a song, and there are a lot of options on how to shape a track into its final form.

Together with producer Nico Brandenburger, we started working on “baby girl”, added instruments, harmonies and elements. The song came to live and turned into my personal hymn to appreciate and take care of myself and the people around me. And to not be so hard on myself, but be gentle and patient.

Creating music for me does not end with the final production of a song. It’s about building a world for the listeners on all levels. This is why I put a lot of thought into the visual contents of my songs. “baby girl” was born out of a process of self-relfection and inner work, of beginning to understand dynamics we have with the people around us, with our family and how our childhood and generational trauma can shape us.

We all do carry a lot of memories and experiences that were passed on to us through generations and generations before – both positive and negative. That’s why, in the cover art of “baby girl”, I’m wearing a suit jacket that belonged to my grandfather and was passed on to me. I wanted to capture this thought of being deeply influenced by prior generations, carrying their burdens as well as their blessings and making them our own.

The whole composition of the cover art plays with the thought of nostalgia and the elements of reflection and projection. I decided to use an old TV to create a projection of my younger self to symbolize that we carry a lot of burdens from our childhood that we project onto our current life and relationships.

At the same time, this childhood picture of me is a reflection of myself – even today – since I still carry this younger version, the baby Marli inside of me. She’s a part of who I am today and when I look in the mirror I do see her.

“baby girl” is the first glimpse into my debut EP reflections : projections, a project that is deeply personal and delves into themes of mental health, relationships, generational trauma, and the abuse of power. These are topics that are still too often stigmatized, but I believe that music has the power to start important conversations.

I’m so excited to now finally share this song with you. I hope “baby girl” becomes a safe space for anyone who needs it – a reminder to treat yourself with the same love and compassion you offer to the world. And that even if you’re going through a rough patch at the moment, things will get better.

Listen to “baby girl” below and stream it everywhere else here.
